Assistant Band Director â Scott High School
The Assistant Band Director will support the Band Director in planning, organizing, and directing the high school band program. Duties include assisting with rehearsals, performances, and competitions; providing individual and small-group instruction; helping manage band equipment and uniforms; and supervising students at all band activities. The Assistant Band Director will work collaboratively to promote student growth, musical excellence, and school spirit.
ASSISTANT BAND DIRECTOR
Position Summary
The Assistant Band Director works under the direction of the Band Director and school administration to support a comprehensive instrumental music program. The Assistant Band Director assists with instruction, rehearsals, performances, competitions, student supervision, equipment management, and other activities necessary for the successful operation of the school band program.
Qualifications
- Valid West Virginia teaching certificate or appropriate authorization/licensure as required by the West Virginia Department of Education.
- Certification or endorsement in Music preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music, marching band techniques, concert band literature, and appropriate instructional practices.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, school administration, and community members.
- Effective communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to attend rehearsals, performances, competitions, camps, parades, athletic events, and other band-related activities outside the regular school day.
- Meet all employment requirements established by Boone County Schools and applicable state law and policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Band Director shall:
- Assist the Band Director in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the overall band program.
- Assist with instruction of students in instrumental music, including individual, sectional, small-group, and full-ensemble instruction.
- Assist in conducting concert band, marching band, pep band, jazz band, or other instrumental ensembles as assigned.
- Assist with marching band rehearsals, including music preparation, marching fundamentals, drill instruction, and field show development.
- Conduct rehearsals or performances in the absence of or at the direction of the Band Director.
- Provide instructional support to students to improve musicianship, technique, tone quality, rhythm, music reading, and performance skills.
- Assist with the selection, preparation, and distribution of music and instructional materials.
- Assist with band camp, summer rehearsals, after-school practices, performances, festivals, competitions, parades, football games, basketball games, concerts, and other scheduled events.
- Supervise students before, during, and after rehearsals, performances, trips, and other band activities.
- Promote appropriate student behavior, discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility, and respect.
- Assist with maintaining accurate student attendance, participation, inventory, uniform, instrument, and equipment records.
- Assist with the issuance, collection, care, maintenance, storage, and inventory of school-owned instruments, uniforms, equipment, and music.
- Assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and organizing instruments and equipment for performances and travel.
- Assist in coordinating transportation, schedules, itineraries, and other logistical needs associated with band activities.
- Assist with auditions, chair placements, student leadership selection, and preparation of students for honor bands, festivals, solo and ensemble events, and other musical opportunities.
- Support recruitment and retention efforts for the instrumental music program.
- Work collaboratively with feeder schools and other music educators to promote continuity and growth within the band program.
- Maintain effective communication with the Band Director, administration, students, parents/guardians, and other appropriate personnel.
- Assist with fundraising activities and other approved activities supporting the band program.
- Follow all Boone County Schools policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable WVSSAC requirements when applicable.
- Provide appropriate supervision and take reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, facilities, and materials.
- Serve as a positive role model and promote the educational mission, standards, and expectations of Boone County Schools.
- Participate in meetings, professional development, and other activities as required.
- Perform other duties related to the band program as assigned by the Band Director, Principal, Superintendent, or designee.
Physical Requirements
The position may require prolonged standing, walking, conducting, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. The employee may be required to lift, carry, move, or assist with musical instruments, equipment, props, uniforms, and other materials associated with the band program.
Work Schedule
The Assistant Band Director must be available for duties beyond the regular instructional day, including evenings, weekends, summer band activities, rehearsals, athletic events, concerts, competitions, festivals, parades, and other performances as scheduled.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated in accordance with applicable West Virginia law, West Virginia Board of Education policy, Boone County Board of Education policy, and established administrative procedures.
Reports To
Band Director and Principal, with overall supervision by the Superintendent or designee.
Terms of Employment
Employment, contract length, compensation, and supplemental pay, if applicable, shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with applicable state law, Board policy, and the approved salary schedule.
