    Description

    In this role, you serve as the administrative leader for an audit unit responsible for shaping, implementing, and maintaining audit policies and procedures that impact statewide audit practices. Your work directly influences the quality, consistency, and compliance of audits conducted across agencies, boards, providers, and programs-particularly those involving publicly funded child care dollars.

    What You'll Do Day-to-Day

    • Oversee and manage assigned audit staff, ensuring they have clear direction, achievable goals, and the support needed to complete audit assignments.
    • Plan, schedule, and coordinate field audits, making sure resources align with priorities and timelines.
    • Conduct final reviews of audit work papers, memos, proposed exceptions, adjustments, and reclassifications to ensure accuracy, compliance, and clarity.
    • Make and justify audit recommendations, often navigating complex fiscal or regulatory issues.
    • Adjust audit methodologies when unexpected situations arise or when audits demand more nuanced approaches.
    • Serve as the primary resource for questions involving complex regulations, fiscal requirements, and interpretation of federal or state policies.
    • Review staff analyses of program operations, controls, systems, and records to ensure proper use of publicly funded child care resources.
    • Collaborate and coordinate with other agencies to ensure audit consistency, resolve concerns, and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Respond to written and telephone inquiries from stakeholders regarding audit results, procedures, or requirements.
    • Approve or modify audit findings before they are finalized and communicated.

    Leadership & Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Assign work and direct daily activities of your staff.
    • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations.
    • Support professional development and encourage growth within the team.
    • Make hiring recommendations, evaluate performance issues, and recommend disciplinary actions when necessary.
    • Approve or deny leave requests, conduct staff meetings, and maintain a productive and positive environment.

    Pay Information

    Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be step 1 of the salary range associated with this position. New hires advance to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Based on collective bargaining and legislative activity, there may be cost of living increases awarded annually. Additional longevity supplements begin after 5 years. The current wage progression for this position is in the table below.

    7 yrs. exp. in auditing, accounting which must have included 42 mos. auditing exp. in accordance with auditing standards or in accordance with prescribed management policies &/or procedures as specified on agency position description; 1 yr. exp. or 1 yr. trg. in supervisory principles/techniques.

    • Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in accounting, business administration, computer science or related field; 5 yrs. exp. in auditing or accounting which must have included 30 mos. auditing exp. in accordance with auditing standards or in accordance with prescribed management policies &/or procedures as specified on agency position description; 1 yr. exp. or 1 yr. trg. in supervisory principles/techniques.
    • Or 12 mos. exp. as External Audit Supervisor, 66465.
    • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
