Applicants must have hands-on experience operating ground penetrating radar (GPR) and performing private utility locates, along with a working understanding of SUE Quality Level A vacuum excavation.
This position requires someone who can evaluate field results, exercise sound judgment around buried utilities, and produce accurate field documentation.
About GeoView
GeoView provides utility designation, mapping, vacuum excavation, and geophysical services to engineering, construction, geological, and environmental professionals. We're growing our utility department and looking for a dependable technician who takes pride in safe, thorough fieldwork and wants opportunities to develop additional skills.
What You Will Do
Private Utility Locating and GPR
• Perform private utility locates using GPR and electromagnetic locating equipment.
• Evaluate GPR and EM results alongside utility records and visible site features.
• Read utility maps, as-builts, construction plans, and 811 responses to develop an effective locating approach.
• Trace and mark underground utilities using appropriate connection methods, frequencies, and field verification techniques.
• Recognize uncertain results, conflicting information, and equipment limitations, and communicate them clearly.
• Collect GPS/GNSS locations, field sketches, photographs, and notes for reports and utility mapping.
SUE Quality Level A and Vacuum Excavation
• Support and perform vacuum excavation to safely expose underground utilities at designated test-hole locations.
• Understand how physical exposure and accurate measurements support Quality Level A utility documentation.
• Operate and maintain trailer-mounted vacuum excavation equipment using water or air excavation methods, as trained and authorized.
• Document exposed utility type, material, size, depth, configuration, and other observable conditions.
• Establish and preserve surface reference points and assist with horizontal and vertical data collection.
• Perform pavement coring or cutting, backfilling, compaction, and surface restoration as required.
• Manage water supply, spoil handling, equipment cleanup, and disposal at approved facilities.
Field Operations
• Complete vehicle, trailer, and equipment inspections and report maintenance needs promptly.
• Safely transport equipment and tow company trailers when qualified and authorized.
• Follow jobsite safety procedures, utility-owner requirements, and applicable traffic-control arrangements.
• Communicate professionally with clients, contractors, surveyors, and project managers.
• Maintain organized field records and keep the project manager informed of progress, access issues, and unexpected conditions.
Required Qualifications
• At least two years of hands-on private utility locating experience.
• Demonstrated experience operating GPR.
• Experience using electromagnetic locators to trace and identify multiple utility systems on private sites.
• Working understanding of SUE Quality Level A vacuum excavation, including safe utility exposure, test-hole measurements, and documentation.
• Ability to read utility records, construction drawings, and site plans.
• Strong understanding of underground utility systems and the limitations of locating methods.
• Ability to work independently, troubleshoot field conditions, and recognize when additional verification is needed.
• Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable for company vehicle use.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to perform outdoor fieldwork, handle hoses and tools, and lift or move equipment weighing up to 80 pounds, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
• Availability for daily travel, overnight assignments, and occasional night or weekend work.
• Ability to meet background-screening requirements for secure project sites.
• Willingness to complete project-specific safety training and certifications.
811 locating experience is valuable, but applicants must also meet the private locating and GPR requirements above.
Additional Experience We Value
• GPR data interpretation, including identifying utility responses and distinguishing them from other subsurface features.
• Hands-on operation of hydrovac or air vacuum excavation equipment, particularly trailer-mounted systems.
• Experience completing SUE test-hole logs and collecting utility measurements.
• GPS/GNSS field data collection and digital reporting.
• Experience towing, maneuvering, and maintaining equipment trailers.
• Pavement coring, concrete cutting, backfilling, compaction, and restoration.
• Mechanical troubleshooting and routine equipment maintenance.
• CDL, applicable safety certifications, or traffic-control training.
• Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish.
