Position Overview
Allied Water Services is seeking an experienced, dependable, and versatile Underground Utility Pipe Layer / Skilled Laborer to join our growing construction team.
This position involves a variety of underground utility projects, including sanitary sewer, water mains, storm sewer systems, septic installations, and drainage work. We are looking for someone with strong hands-on experience who understands underground construction, can read plans, establish grades and elevations, and work efficiently alongside equipment operators and crew leaders.
The ideal candidate is adaptable, takes initiative, and is comfortable working across multiple types of projects rather than performing the same tasks every day.
Key Responsibilities
Sewer & Water Utilities
- Install sanitary sewer mains, service laterals, and underground water mains.
- Work with PVC, SDR, ductile iron, C900, HDPE, copper, and other utility piping.
- Install valves, fittings, hydrants, cleanouts, and service connections.
- Perform proper pipe bedding, backfilling, and compaction.
Storm Sewer & Drainage
- Install storm sewer piping, catch basins, manholes, inlets, and precast structures.
- Set structures to proper elevations and alignments.
- Install stormwater drainage systems, yard drains, and underground piping.
Septic Systems
- Assist with conventional, mound, aerobic, and advanced septic system installations.
- Install septic tanks, distribution boxes, pump chambers, lift stations, and drain fields.
- Assist with gravity and pressure distribution systems.
- Work with systems such as Presby AES, Norweco, Multi-Flo, Delta, and Clearstream.
Plans, Layout & Grade Control
- Read and interpret construction drawings, utility profiles, grading plans, and septic designs.
- Operate rotary lasers, pipe lasers, and grade rods.
- Establish pipe slopes, invert elevations, and excavation depths.
- Communicate layout and grade requirements to excavator operators.
General Field Responsibilities
- Assist with excavation, pipe installation, structure placement, and site restoration.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, trench boxes, and existing underground utilities.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and clean, organized jobsites.
- Work across different crews and project types as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Previous hands-on underground utility construction experience.
- Experience installing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, or water piping.
- Ability to read construction plans and understand elevations and grades.
- Experience using rotary lasers, grade rods, or pipe lasers.
- Knowledge of proper pipe installation, bedding, and backfilling.
- Ability to perform physically demanding construction work.
- Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work effectively with a crew.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience installing septic tanks, drain fields, and advanced treatment systems.
- Experience setting storm structures, catch basins, and manholes.
- Excavator or skid steer operating experience.
- CDL Class A or B.
- Municipal or commercial underground utility experience.
- OSHA training and trench safety knowledge.
