The Postpartum Newborn Unit consists of 36 postpartum and 36 + newborn beds. Patient stays range from 24 – 96 hours. RN’s have the opportunity to provide patient education and lactation support for all our patients.
Shift: Five 8-hour shifts; 9a-5p or 10a-6p,
General Summary
Under general supervision, provides specialized service in a hospital or clinic setting to a select group of pre and postnatal mothers and infants.

Responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive breastfeeding program for both inpatients and outpatients
Responsible for reviewing andmaintainingall teaching aids.
Assistswith the development of an in-house breastfeeding protocol.
Reviews andmaintainsa current file of research and literature on breastfeeding for the staff,physiciansand other interested persons.
Provides telephone consultations for complicated situations, such as multiple births, premature infants,or forproblem consultations.
Manages all breastfeeding equipment and aids andresponsiblefor community education to promote breastfeeding.

Education Requirements
Associate’s degree.
Experience Requirements
In accordance withrequirements to obtain certification as a Lactation Consultant,noexperience.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements
Current certification from the International Board as Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) andbe registeredthrough the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Associationupon hire.
RN License Required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Skills in the area of teaching, adultlearningand in determining the effectiveness of educational programs.
Knowledge of effective training and development methods.
Ability to deliver presentations effectively to a variety of audiences.
Ability to prepare training material as needed.
Excellent computer skillsto includeskill in the use of required software.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment as well as during potentially emotional situations.
