Experienced HVAC & Plumbing Service Technician
American Mechanical Services, LLC is hiring experienced HVAC and plumbing service technicians to join our growing Charleston-area team.
This is one combined posting for both trades. Applicants may specialize in HVAC or plumbing and are not required to be equally experienced in both. Cross-trade experience is strongly preferred and may qualify the applicant for higher compensation.
AMS performs residential and commercial service, maintenance, repairs, replacements, installations, and mechanical construction. Our primary focus is commercial work, but technicians must be comfortable assisting residential customers when assigned.

HVAC Responsibilities
Depending on experience, HVAC responsibilities may include:
- Diagnose and repair commercial and residential HVAC systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and equipment inspections.
- Service split systems, package units, rooftop units, heat pumps, furnaces, mini-splits, boilers, pumps, controls, and related equipment.
- Complete equipment replacements, retrofits, startups, and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot electrical, controls, airflow, refrigerant, drainage, and mechanical issues.
- Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, leak searches, and required documentation.
- Read plans, wiring diagrams, equipment schedules, specifications, and manufacturer instructions.
- Identify additional repairs or deficiencies and clearly explain recommendations.
- Complete accurate service reports, photographs, material records, and job documentation.
Plumbing Responsibilities
Depending on experience, plumbing responsibilities may include:
- Diagnose and repair commercial and residential plumbing systems.
- Service water heaters, tankless systems, fixtures, valves, pumps, drains, sewer piping, water piping, and related equipment.
- Perform drain cleaning, camera inspections, leak repairs, and plumbing-system testing.
- Install and repair commercial and residential fixtures and equipment.
- Complete plumbing rough-ins, trim-outs, replacements, and renovation work.
- Read plans, plumbing diagrams, specifications, equipment schedules, and manufacturer instructions.
- Identify code concerns, existing deficiencies, and additional work requiring approval.
- Complete accurate service reports, photographs, material records, and job documentation.
General Responsibilities
- Report to the assigned job or shop location on time and prepared to work.
- Communicate with dispatch and management throughout the workday.
- Follow the required mobile workflow and update job status in Simpro.
- Complete the required Job Hazard Analysis before beginning work.
- Upload reports, photographs, purchase orders, receipts, and material information before leaving the job.
- Contact dispatch before performing work outside the authorized scope.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Protect customer property and represent AMS professionally.
- Coordinate effectively with customers, general contractors, facility personnel, inspectors, and other trades.
- Participate in the rotating on-call schedule when assigned.
- Help train apprentices and less-experienced technicians when appropriate.
- Follow company safety policies and refuse work that cannot be performed safely.
Required Qualifications
- Previous professional HVAC or plumbing field experience
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision
- Ability to communicate clearly with customers and office personnel
- Ability to document work completely and accurately
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass applicable background and driving-record requirements
- Ability to safely lift, carry, climb, kneel, work from ladders, and perform normal trade duties
- Willingness to use Simpro and follow established company procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of HVAC or plumbing experience
- Commercial service and construction experience
- EPA Section 608 certification for HVAC applicants
- South Carolina trade license or journeyman-level qualifications
- Experience with boilers, generators, building controls, pumps, commercial water heaters, or mechanical systems
- Experience reading commercial plans and specifications
- Experience supervising helpers or apprentices
- Experience in both HVAC and plumbing
