Experienced Engineer/Project Manager (P.E.) (Consulting: Remediation/ Solid Waste) - Madison, WI (or Greater WI area)

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is seeking an experienced Mid- to Senior-Level Environmental Engineer / Project Manager to join our Madison, Wisconsin office. This position is ideal for an engineer with strong technical and project management capabilities who enjoys building client relationships, delivering high-quality work, and contributing to business growth.

The successful candidate will support and lead environmental and solid waste projects for municipal, industrial, and private sector clients throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. We are particularly interested in candidates who can serve as a seller-doer-successfully managing projects and client relationships while identifying opportunities for additional work and helping grow Tetra Tech's environmental and solid waste practice.

A Professional Engineer (PE) license in Wisconsin, or the ability to obtain Wisconsin licensure through reciprocity/comity within six (6) months of start date, is required.

Position Summary:

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, geologists, designers, and technical specialists, you will manage and support environmental and solid waste projects from initial concept through design, permitting, construction, and implementation.

Depending on experience, this position may serve as a Project Manager, Senior Engineer, and/or Seller-Doer, with responsibility for managing clients, scopes, schedules, budgets, technical deliverables, and project teams.

The ideal candidate will combine sound engineering judgment with strong communication and relationship-building skills and will be comfortable working directly with clients and regulatory agencies. The position also provides opportunities to participate in proposal development, client account planning, cross-selling, and development of new business.

Essential Job Functions:

• Manage environmental, solid waste, remediation, and related engineering projects for municipal and private sector clients.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and maintain strong, responsive, long-term client relationships.
• Plan, develop, coordinate, and direct multidisciplinary project teams and technical assignments.
• Manage project scope, schedule, budget, staffing, subcontractors, and deliverables.
• Prepare and review engineering designs, calculations, plans, specifications, reports, permit applications, and other technical documents.
• Support engineering and permitting associated with solid waste facilities, including landfills and related infrastructure.
• Support environmental remediation, site investigation, compliance, and redevelopment projects, as applicable.
• Coordinate with Wisconsin regulatory agencies and other local, state, and federal agencies.
• Provide technical leadership and engineering judgment for complex project issues.
• Direct and review the work of engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and subcontractors.
• Maintain project quality through appropriate technical review and quality assurance/quality control procedures.
• Mentor and develop junior and mid-level technical staff.
• Prepare proposals, scopes of work, project schedules, and cost estimates.
• Participate in client development activities, including identifying upcoming client needs and opportunities.
• Support strategic initiatives for continued work with key clients and targeted business sectors.
• Cross-sell Tetra Tech services and collaborate with colleagues across offices and technical practices.
• Develop new work through existing client relationships, professional networks, and high-quality project delivery.
• Assist with interviews, presentations, and other business development activities.
• Manage multiple projects and priorities concurrently while meeting schedule, quality, and financial objectives.
• Conduct periodic field visits and provide technical support during investigation and construction activities.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across Tetra Tech's Wisconsin and Upper Midwest offices.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.

• Minimum of approximately 7 years of relevant environmental, solid waste, civil, or related engineering consulting experience.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Wisconsin or current PE licensure in another state with the ability to obtain Wisconsin licensure through comity/reciprocity or have ability to acquire PE within six (6) months from hire.

• Demonstrated project management experience, including responsibility for project budgets, schedules, staff, technical deliverables, and client communication.

• Experience delivering environmental, solid waste, remediation, or related infrastructure projects.

• Strong technical engineering, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, regulators, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with the ability to develop productive client and team relationships.

• Working knowledge of applicable environmental and/or solid waste regulations and permitting requirements.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other commonly used project and engineering software.

• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to client and project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 10+ years of experience in environmental, solid waste, remediation, civil, or related engineering consulting.
• Previous experience serving as a Project Manager for environmental or solid waste projects.
• Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining client relationships.
• Seller-doer experience, including proposal development, client account development, cross-selling, and generation of repeat or new work.
• Existing relationships with municipal, industrial, solid waste, or other environmental clients in Wisconsin or the Upper Midwest.
• Experience with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regulations and permitting processes.
• Experience with landfill design, permitting, construction, expansion, closure, stormwater, leachate, landfill gas, or related solid waste infrastructure.
• Experience with environmental remediation, site investigation, redevelopment, or regulatory compliance.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.
• Master's degree in engineering or a related technical field.

Physical Requirements:

• Regularly required to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; occasional standing and walking within the office environment.
• Occasionally required to lift/move up to 10 lbs, with infrequent lifting of up to 25 lbs.
• Requires use of hands for typing, handling materials, and operating office equipment; vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• May occasionally travel to field sites (approximately 10-30% of the time), which can involve walking on uneven terrain and slopes up to 2:1 or 3:1 grade.
• When in the field, must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator if required, and may need to meet medical clearance standards based on assignment.
