Position Summary
The Experienced Damage Prevention Technician is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utility facilities in accordance with state 811 laws, APWA color codes, company standards, and client requirements. This role plays a critical part in public safety, damage prevention, and infrastructure protection.
Key Responsibilities:
Respond to 811 locate requests within required timelines.
Accurately locate and mark underground utilities, including:
Electric
Gas
Communications/Fiber
Water
Sewer
CATV systems
Interpret utility maps, prints, and GIS systems.
Operate locating equipment including:
Electromagnetic locators
Ground penetrating radar (GPR)
GPS/GIS devices
Signal transmitters and receivers
Maintain detailed documentation and digital ticket updates.
Communicate professionally with contractors, homeowners, municipalities, and utility owners.
Follow OSHA, company safety, and traffic control procedures.
Identify hazardous conditions and escalate issues when necessary.
Perform field verification and quality assurance on completed marks.
Maintain company vehicle, equipment, and inventory.
Qualifications:
Minimum 2–5 years utility locating experience preferred.
Knowledge of APWA utility marking standards.
Strong understanding of damage prevention practices.
Ability to read construction plans and utility maps.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Certifications:
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
CPR/First Aid
NULCA certification
State damage prevention certifications
Physical Requirements:
Walking long distances.
Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Frequent bending, kneeling, and standing.
Ability to work in extreme heat conditions common in many regions.
