    GENERAL: The employee will support the City of Rock Springs mission "To provide all individuals, through the combined efforts of city government and the people it serves, an effective, efficient and productive form of government, while promoting an enhanced quality of life, open communications and economic growth".

The employee must also demonstrate the competencies for their position, and adhere to policies and procedures of their department and the City of Rock Springs.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Exhibit Technician I - Entry Level. Positions at this level perform most of the duties required of Exhibit Technician II, but are not expected to perform at the same skill level. The employee exercises less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is normally supervised while in progress. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Employees may have limited or no directly related work experience.

    Exhibit Technician II - Employee performs a wide range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgement and initiative. Employees receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the museum. Positions in are normally filled by advancement from the entry level, requiring three years of experience and successful performance.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    Exhibit Technician I

    Exercises no supervision.

    Exhibit Technician II

    May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.

    EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    • Exercises general supervision of temporary or volunteer employees as assigned and performs all job tasks both independently and in conjunction with other staff as directed.
    • Performs responsible administrative work involving the use of independent judgment, personal initiative and problem solving; performs varied and responsible duties to assist in the processing and completion of administrative operations for assigned staff.
    • Serves as a resource and information source regarding the museum and history of Rock Springs; answers questions and provide information where judgment, knowledge and interpretations are utilized; refers patrons and callers to appropriate sources as necessary.
    • Fabricates and installs exhibits.
    • Organizes and maintains data and information.
    • Conducts tours and programs and exhibits of the museum both on and off site.
    • Keeps abreast of current developments concerning historical subject matter.
    • Utilizes historical facts and current events to maintain presence on social media and market museum to the public.
    • Performs historical research to guarantee accuracy and authenticity of inquiries, verbal and written, and in displays ensuring correct spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
    • Maintains and accounts for storage and location of artifacts; assists in the preparation of artifacts for exhibits in conjunction with other staff.
    • Receives telephone calls, works collaboratively, and communicates clearly and effectively with patrons, staff, other City departments and officials and outside agencies.
    • Operates office machines and equipment including word processors, computers, printers, copiers, and calculators; routinely uses a full range of spreadsheet, cataloguing and computer software applications.
    • Collects cash, check and credit card payments over the counter and over the phone.
    • Attends after hour's functions and conferences as needed.

    JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Exhibit Technician I

    ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

    Has the knowledge, skills and ability to:

    • Utilize research skills and maintain a knowledge base of the history of the west, specifically Rock Springs, to ensure administration of exhibits and assist with historical inquiries.
    • Ability to use different computer programs and social media.
    • Assist in orienting and training of volunteer and temporary staff.
    • Use modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computer equipment, cameras and applicable software programs.
    • Work collaboratively and communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, City Officials, outside agencies and the general public during general communication or public speaking events.
    • Utilize applicable spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including, but not limited to employees, vendors and the general public.
    • Use independent judgment, initiative, and good human relations and problem solving skills in the application and follow through on decisions.
    • Meet schedules and timelines and to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
    • Take and follow the directions of their supervisors.

    Exhibit Technician II

    In addition to the qualifications for Exhibit Technician I has the knowledge, skills and ability to:

    • Develop, plan, and execute new displays and display materials, including press, standalone information, and display signage.
    • Safely and efficiently, use manual and power tools necessary to develop museum exhibits. (Tools used may include, but are not limited to: cutting blades, T squares, triangles, programmable letter cutters, etc.)

    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    Working knowledge of office procedures, genealogy, historical research, museum exhibits and research projects, fabrication, construction, and installation knowledge, instructional, crafting, photography, or work in audio/visual settings or like experience.

    Education:

    Equivalent to an associate's degree in history, museum studies or related area. Other equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

    License or Certificate:

    Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

    Ability to work in a standard office environment. Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to mechanical, electrical and chemical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
