Excise Tax Manager
Houston, TX | Hybrid / OnsiteThis is a hands-on role for someone who understands the tax complexities surrounding
motor fuels, petroleum products, product movement, and renewable fuels. The position will have significant interaction with accounting and operational teams and will serve as an internal resource for excise tax matters.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Oversee preparation and submission of federal and state excise tax filings across multiple jurisdictions.
Manage Form 720 requirements and applicable motor fuel and energy-related tax reporting.
Review transactional activity to determine appropriate tax treatment for various fuel products and movements.
Analyze and reconcile tax calculations against shipment activity, inventory records, transportation documentation, and financial data.
Research and resolve discrepancies between operational activity and reported tax amounts.
Administer applicable tax exemptions, credits, refunds, and supporting certificates.
Maintain documentation necessary to substantiate filings and tax positions.
Coordinate responses to government notices, information requests, examinations, and excise tax audits.
Research federal and state tax rules and provide practical guidance to internal business partners.
Assess potential tax impacts when the business introduces new products, markets, transportation routes, or operating structures.
Provide excise tax guidance to Accounting, Operations, Trading, Legal, and other internal groups.
Stay current on changes affecting fuel and energy taxation and determine how new requirements should be implemented.
Identify opportunities to improve reporting accuracy, controls, documentation, and overall tax processes.
Develop procedures and compliance schedules that create consistency and appropriate backup coverage across the function.
What We're Looking For
5+ years of directly relevant experience involving excise tax, motor fuel tax, fuel taxation, or energy/commodity tax compliance.
Strong understanding of federal excise tax rules and IRS Form 720 requirements.
Experience working with state-level motor fuel tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
Familiarity with above-rack and below-rack fuel transactions is highly desirable.
Background within fuel distribution, petroleum products, terminals, energy, commodities, or a similar environment preferred.
Ability to analyze significant volumes of transaction, inventory, and shipment information and connect that activity to tax reporting.
Experience with renewable diesel, biodiesel, ethanol, renewable fuels, or related tax programs is beneficial.
Previous involvement with tax audits, regulatory inquiries, notices, or assessments.
Strong reconciliation, research, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to translate technical tax requirements into understandable guidance for non-tax teams.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field preferred.
CPA, MST, or other advanced tax credentials are a plus.
The Right Fit
We're looking for someone who is more than a traditional corporate tax professional. This person should understand the operational side of fuel taxation and be comfortable following a transaction from product movement through accounting and ultimately to the tax return.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge while also being willing to get into the details, solve problems, improve processes, and work closely with the teams responsible for day-to-day business activity.
