The University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites for the preparation of future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.

The Exceptional Children's Behavior Support Assistant provides supplemental behavioral support to identified students with disabilities whose behavioral or emotional needs interfere with their participation in school or access to instruction.

The assistant will work directly with individual students and small groups, implement student-specific behavioral strategies, support students during transitions and periods of escalation, assist with classroom reentry, and collect progress-monitoring data. The goal of the position is to help students remain engaged in school, develop appropriate replacement and self-regulation skills, and become more independent.

The Behavior Support Assistant reports to the Director of Student Support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish supportive and appropriate relationships with identified students.
  • Provide individual and small-group behavioral support.
  • Teach and reinforce self-regulation, communication, coping, social-emotional, and replacement-behavior skills.
  • Implement strategies identified in students' IEPs, Behavior Intervention Plans, safety plans, and other student-support plans.
  • Provide planned, transitional, and short-term crisis support based on student needs.
  • Support students during classroom instruction, transitions, arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, enrichment, and other school activities.
  • Recognize early signs of escalation and use approved prevention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Help students return to instruction following behavioral escalation or temporary removal from the classroom.
  • Implement visual schedules, reinforcement systems, check-in/check-out procedures, regulation spaces, and other identified supports.
  • Assist students with academic activities when behavioral needs interfere with their access to instruction.
  • Support students in developing independence and gradually reduce adult assistance as appropriate.
  • Observe students across school settings and identify patterns, triggers, and effective supports.
  • Collect and maintain accurate daily data on interventions, student behavior, instructional removals, and student progress.
  • Assist with data collection for Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Share progress-monitoring information with the Director of Student Support and educational teams.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Model student-specific behavioral strategies for teachers, instructional assistants, and other staff.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, EC staff, families, related-service providers, and outside providers.
  • Participate in student-support, IEP, and Behavior Intervention Plan meetings as requested.
  • Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and safety or crisis-prevention training.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and follow all school, university, state, and federal requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This is a grant-funded, time-limited position supported through the PRC 029 Behavior Support Grant. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding and the ongoing needs of the program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with students with disabilities or significant behavioral needs.
  • Experience providing behavioral or academic support in a school setting.
  • Experience implementing IEPs, Behavior Intervention Plans, reinforcement systems, or behavior data-collection procedures.
  • Training in positive behavioral interventions, de-escalation, crisis prevention, restorative practices, or trauma-responsive practices.
  • Registered Behavior Technician certification or other relevant behavioral training.

Work Schedule/Hours

Monday - Friday 7:15 - 3:15

The position requires frequent movement throughout the school building and may include standing, walking, sitting on the floor, accompanying students during transitions, and working outdoors. The employee must be able to respond safely during behavioral situations and perform physical responsibilities authorized by university policy and required training.

Hiring Range $20 - $25

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
