Title
: Custodian
Definition
: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds / Principal; the custodian / janitorial personnel preforms varied and simple routine tasks involved in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds; does related work as required and/or requested by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds / Principal
Performance Responsibilities
:
Makes a daily inspection of the building and grounds, secures building, analyzes and determines the cleaning work to be done and the materials needed. Either works alone or as one of a group and performs the following
daily
duties.
A.
Sweeps, dusts, scrubs, and mops floors and corridors;
B.
Realigns furniture, adjusts shades and/or blinds, replaces light bulbs;
C.
Cleans window sills, chalk rails, and chalkboards;
D.
Washes windows, cleans desktops, writing on walls and/or lockers;
E.
Secures all windows and doors;
F.
Vacuums rugs and carpets;
G.
Cleans toilets, urinals, skins, drinking fountains, and replenishes washroom supplies;
H.
Empties waste baskets;
I.
Reports security incidents and necessary repairs to the principal and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds;
J.
Obtains stores and safeguards the proper use of needed equipment, materials and supplies;
K.
Establishes and maintains needed records re equipment, materials, supplies, work completed, and time on task.
Other Duties, when required or as needed
:
A. Assists with snow removal as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds / Principal from sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and with spreading sand and/or salt on ice surfaces;
B. Assists in the operation and HVAC equipment;
C. Assists in lawn maintenance and other outside related work;
D. Assists carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers and/or other mechanics by performing related tasks, carrying tools and materials, by placing and removing ladders, and by cleaning-up after work has been completed;
E.
Receives and distributes supplies and equipment;
F.
Takes the lead in the maintenance of desks, chairs, carpets, lighting fixtures, windows, and other furniture and fixtures, and defrosts refrigerators;
G.
Be on-call for emergencies, i.e., power and equipment failures, snow storms, vandalism, etc.... at the directive of the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
H.
The above responsibilities are general in nature and pertain to a routine work day and may be altered or supplemented by the school principal and/or Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds;
I.
Strips, reseals and waxes classrooms, offices and/or corridors;
J. Acts as a safety/security guard, and takes necessary steps to protect the building and grounds from damage in cases of emergency.
Requirements
:
A.
Minimum of two (2) years experience in work involving the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds, as well as the reconditioning and care of furniture and fixtures.
B.
Considerable knowledge of the problems, procedures, and
operations involved in the cleaning and maintenance of a school building, as well as the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment.
C.
Possession of a Black Seal Boiler License issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Industry (Custodians are expected to qualify for a Black Seal License) within one (1) year of employment.)
D. Required criminal history background check and proof of United States citizenship or legal resident alien status.
E.
Possession of a valid New Jersey Drivers License
Ability
:
A. To read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position
B. To understand, remember and carry-out oral and written directions, and to learn quickly from oral and written directions and form demonstrations.
C. To associate with children, and to get-along and work together with school staff.
D. To analyze building, HVAC and grounds maintenance problems.
E. Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself and others.
Reports To
: School principal and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
A. Custodians are employed on a twelve (12) month basis and work an eight (8) hour shift. Day shift with one-half hour for lunch.
B. May request to work day shift subject to approval by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
C. Custodians work under the direct supervision of the School Principal and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or School Business Administrator.
D. All shifts are subject to change at the discretion of the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
Salary/Evaluation
: Salary in accordance with the FPEA negotiated agreement Evaluation by School Principal and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or School Business Administrator.
