    Description

    Pediatric Hospitalist

Children in the hospital need a physician who can decide, stabilize, and coordinate care when families are most afraid. This role owns the inpatient course—from first assessment through a safe discharge—so every child leaves clearer, safer, and ready for what comes next. You will set the clinical standard for a busy pediatric service and make the hospital a place families trust.

    Performance Objectives

    • Lead care for a defined pediatric census, delivering timely assessments and treatment plans that shorten stay without compromising safety.
    • Stabilize acute deterioration and escalate promptly so critically ill children reach the right level of care within minutes.
    • Own discharge readiness: reconcile medications, close follow-up gaps, and send families home with a plan they can carry out.
    • Resolve same-day barriers with nursing, specialists, and case management before delays become harm.
    • Document and hand off with precision so night teams and consultants can act without missed risk or rework.
    • Coach residents or advanced practice clinicians until their independent decisions meet your standard of care.
    • Review readmissions, safety events, and family experience, then change practice where the data shows delay or harm.

    Environment and Resources

You will practice on a dedicated pediatric inpatient service with 24/7 nursing, pediatric pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and on-call specialty backup. Orders, notes, and results live in a shared electronic record. You report to the physician medical director and share nights, weekends, and holidays with a hospitalist team. Quality, case management, and social work are on site, not on a distant queue.

    Essential Qualifications

    • MD or DO with board certification or eligibility in Pediatrics.
    • Active state medical license, or eligibility to obtain one before start.
    • Current PALS and proven skill managing respiratory failure, sepsis, dehydration, and complex chronic disease in hospital.
    • A record of running a census, writing clear plans, and handing off without loss of critical detail.
    • Comfort teaching trainees or advanced practice clinicians and giving direct, respectful feedback.
    • Eligibility for hospital privileges and medical staff membership.

    Why This Role

    • Inpatient pediatrics only—no competing clinic panel pulling you out of the hospital.
    • A shared-service model that protects recovery time between stretches of duty.
    • Real authority over the care plan, with specialists available when a case outgrows general pediatrics.
    • A quality program that acts on your recommendations rather than filing them away.
