    Description

    Gastroenterology Physician Assistant

Digestive disease care succeeds when patients move from first visit to a clear plan without delay, confusion, or avoidable complications. In this role, you will own that path for a busy gastroenterology practice: evaluate complex GI presentations, advance treatment, and keep procedures, follow-up, and communication tight. Your judgment will determine whether patients get answers sooner and whether the physician team can focus on the cases that need them most.

    Performance Objectives

    • Complete timely, accurate evaluations of new and returning GI patients so diagnosis and treatment start at the visit, not after a backlog of chart work.
    • Manage chronic conditions—including IBD, GERD, liver disease, and functional disorders—so disease control, adherence, and symptom scores improve between visits.
    • Prepare patients for endoscopy and other procedures, then close the loop on results, so cancellations, incomplete prep, and missed follow-up decline.
    • Escalate red-flag findings and unstable patients promptly, reducing delayed referrals and preventable emergency visits.
    • Document and communicate plans that referring clinicians and patients can act on the same day, cutting rework and callback volume.
    • Contribute to quality measures—screening completion, polyp surveillance intervals, and medication safety—so the practice meets clinical and payer standards.

    Environment & Resources

You will practice alongside gastroenterologists, nurses, and endoscopy staff in an outpatient clinic with procedure-day coverage. Expect a shared EHR, established order sets, and on-site physician backup for complex decisions. You will report to the lead gastroenterologist, with scheduling support and a defined panel rather than an open-ended inbox.

    Essential Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited PA program and current NCCPA certification, with an active state license or eligibility to obtain one before start.
    • At least two years of gastroenterology, hepatology, or closely related internal-medicine experience managing GI disease, not observation alone.
    • Demonstrated skill interpreting labs, imaging, and pathology and translating them into a plan patients understand.
    • Procedure-adjacent competence: consent, bowel-prep counseling, anticoagulation holds, and post-procedure complication recognition.
    • DEA registration or ability to obtain it, plus a record of safe prescribing for GI therapies.
    • Clear written communication under volume; chart closure within the practice standard is non-negotiable.

    Role Selling Points

    • A defined GI panel with physician partnership, not a generalist float role.
    • Direct influence on access, procedure readiness, and chronic-disease outcomes.
    • Structured backup for high-risk decisions rather than solo call.
    • A practice that measures what matters: follow-up completion, safety, and patient understanding.
