    Description

    Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant

Patients arrive without a chart, a plan, or time to spare. This role exists to turn that uncertainty into a clear diagnosis, a safe disposition, and a faster path through a crowded emergency department. You will practice at the front line of acute care, where judgment, procedures, and calm communication change outcomes in a single shift.

    Performance Objectives

    • Evaluate undifferentiated emergency patients and complete timely, accurate assessments that support safe treatment and disposition.
    • Manage a high-acuity panel—trauma, cardiac, respiratory, neurologic, and sepsis presentations—within physician-led protocols and scope of practice.
    • Perform indicated procedures, including laceration repair, incision and drainage, splinting, and other ED interventions, with documented competence and low complication rates.
    • Order and interpret diagnostic studies in context, escalate critical findings immediately, and close the loop with the attending physician.
    • Reduce avoidable delays by coordinating nursing, consultants, and ancillary services so admitted and discharged patients move without unnecessary holds.
    • Document encounters that support clinical decisions, coding integrity, and continuity for the next clinician.
    • Counsel patients and families on diagnosis, risk, and next steps so discharge instructions are understood and followed.

    Environment & Resources

You will practice in a physician-supervised emergency department alongside nurses, technicians, and consulting specialists. Shift-based coverage, established order sets, and on-site diagnostics support rapid decisions. You report clinically to the attending emergency physician and operationally through the department’s advanced-practice leadership.

    Essential Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program and current NCCPA certification.
    • Active state PA license, or eligibility to obtain one before start, with DEA registration as required for the practice.
    • Emergency medicine, urgent care, or acute-care experience with independent management of unstable patients under physician supervision.
    • Demonstrated procedural skill appropriate to emergency practice and willingness to maintain credentialing.
    • Current BLS and ACLS; PALS or ATLS preferred when the department serves pediatric or trauma patients.
    • Clear written and verbal communication under time pressure, including accurate EHR documentation.

    Why This Role

    • Breadth of pathology in a single shift—no two presentations repeat.
    • Real procedural volume, not observation from the sideline.
    • Physician partnership that backs autonomous decisions inside a defined scope.
    • Direct influence on door-to-provider time, throughput, and patient experience.
    • A schedule built around shifts, with recovery time between high-intensity blocks.
