The City of Norfolks Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an Equipment Operator II to join our landscaping crews. This position will work with our Parks and Forestry Operations to maintain 2700 acres of turf and landscape beds on a regular basis.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $44,994.56

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains grounds and right of ways by collecting and delivering trash containers, mowing grass, raking leaves, digging holes, planting, pruning and maintaining trees and flower beds, mixing and applying chemicals, loading and applying mulch, weed eating, trimming, performing general care of landscape, grading athletic fields for game play, installing and maintaining turf, removing trees, grinding tree stumps, identifying plants and trees, cleaning up job sites, hauling topsoil, grading, removing snow, aerating lawns, cutting grass, trimming trees, removing dead limbs, removing storm damage, cutting back weeds, picking up and removing litter, refuse and debris from vacant lots.

  • Operates heavy equipment to include Surf Rakes (clean beaches), backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers. This position also operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, fork lifts, and other motorized equipment in grounds maintenance operations.

  • Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to, checking fluids, changing blades and daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe to operate.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Two years experience in operation of machinery needed for grounds maintenance and horticulture

Valid Virginia Drivers License, required.

Additional Preferred Experience:

Two years experience in operation of machinery needed for grounds maintenance and horticulture

Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • Able to obtain Va. Pesticide license within 6 months
  • May require Commercial Driver License

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509

Work Hours: Monday -Friday, 6:30AM to 3:00PM, 40 hours per week

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
