JOB TITLE: Equipment Operations Spotter

About the Job: The Scissor Lift (Equipment Operations) Spotter supports safe aerial lift operations by guiding and monitoring scissor lift movement, work positioning, and surrounding hazards in active construction environments. This role is responsible for maintaining exclusion zones, preventing struck-by and pinch-point incidents, coordinating with nearby trades, and ensuring the lift operator can work safely in congested areas such as data halls, corridors, MEP spaces, and overhead work zones.

What you will do:

Lift Movement & Ground Guidance

  • Provide dedicated ground guidance for scissor lift travel, positioning, and work-area setup.

  • Maintain continuous visual awareness of the lift, operator, and surrounding conditions while the lift is in motion.

  • Assist with safe navigation through congested work areas, including narrow aisles, doorways, ramps, and uneven surfaces.

  • Communicate clearly using agreed-upon hand signals and/or radio communication.

Hazard Recognition & Control

  • Identify and actively control hazards including:

  • Overhead obstructions (conduit, cable tray, sprinklers, ductwork, temporary supports)

  • Floor hazards (holes, cords, debris, uneven slabs, ramps, transitions)

  • Pinch/crush points (walls, columns, racks, door frames, other equipment)

  • Struck-by exposure from moving equipment, forklifts, carts, and other lifts

  • Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions exist and notify supervision/Safety as needed.

Work Zone Management

  • Establish and maintain an exclusion zone around the scissor lift during operation when required.

  • Keep pedestrians and other trades clear of the lift's travel path and work radius.

  • Assist with barricades, cones, signage, and spotter tape placement as required by site policy.

Support to Operator & Crew

  • Assist the operator with staging material and keeping the lift work area clear.

  • Help confirm load is within rated capacity and materials are secured before movement.

  • Monitor for improper behaviors such as riding rails, leaning out, or relocating while elevated (per site rules).

  • Support safe entry/exit of the lift and maintain awareness of tie-off requirements per site policy.

Compliance & Documentation Support

  • Ensure lift operations follow:

  • Manufacturer requirements

  • OSHA/ANSI expectations

  • Site-specific safety plans (SSSP / SSQP)

  • Meta / GC lift rules and permit requirements (if applicable)

  • Confirm pre-use inspections are completed and documented prior to use.

  • Participate in daily pre-task plans (PTPs), JSAs, and stretch & flex

What you will need:

  • Experience working on active construction sites (data center preferred).

  • Strong situational awareness and ability to recognize hazards in real time.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with operators, trades, and leadership.

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and work in indoor/outdoor conditions.

  • Willingness to stop work and escalate safety concerns without hesitation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Aerial lift / MEWP familiarization (scissor lifts, boom lifts).

  • OSHA 10 (OSHA 30 preferred). (can be completed AFTER hiring)

  • Experience in mission-critical environments with high trade density and strict safety rules.

  • Familiarity with controlled access zones, barricading, and traffic control practices.
