Description

The City of South Lake Tahoe Motor Pool has an opening for an Equipment Mechanic I/II who makes minor and major mechanical repairs, as well as performs general service work on gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment. The Motor Pool supports the full array of City vehicles from fire engines and police cruisers to articulating arm mowers and street sweepers. Work also includes 2- and 4-cycle engines as well as alternative-fuel vehicles. The position works a standard 5 day / 40 hour per week shift running from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The selected candidate may be offered either the Equipment Mechanic I or Equipment Mechanic II position based on demonstrated skill strength and experience.
To be hired as an Equipment Mechanic I, a candidate must have at least 2 years of experience and the tooling needed in performing automotive and equipment maintenance and repair duties, including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment AND at least one certificate in the major areas of diagnostics, brakes, fuel systems, diesel and gas engines, electrical and electronics, public safety required, multiple certifications preferred. Pursuit of additional certifications during employment is expected.
To be hired as an Equipment Mechanic II, a candidate must have at least 4 years of experience and the tooling needed in performing automotive and equipment maintenance and repair duties AND significant progress towards ASE masters certification required; completed ASE masters certification preferred.

Equipment Mechanic I: $5,673 - $6,896 per month
Equipment Mechanic II: $6,241 - $7,585 per month

Examples of Duties

Diagnoses and repairs faulty suspension, steering and exhaust systems and related parts and equipment.
Rebuilds, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches and their related systems.
Diagnoses and repairs all types of fuel systems and their related systems.
Diagnoses and repairs all types of electrical systems and their related systems.
Diagnoses and repairs all types of computerized control systems, and their related systems.
Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems.
Diagnoses, repairs, replace and or adjust all types of brake systems including their related systems.
Diagnoses and repairs all types cooling, heating and air conditioning systems.
Assists in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials.
Maintains work, time, and material records.
Assists in evaluation of existing and potential equipment and vehicles.
May perform a variety of general building maintenance work within Public Works.
Diagnoses and repairs all types Public Safety apparatus and emergency vehicles.
Inspects and prepares all equipment for winter snow removal duties.
Performs general welding fabrication and machine work.
Cleans up and contains spills.
Performs related duties as required.
Equipment Mechanic I and Equipment Mechanic II perform all functions but the Equipment Mechanic I does so under greater supervision and exercises less independent discretion and judgement.

The effectiveness of the Mechanic I and IIs position will be measured in many ways. The following list represents some, but not all, of the standard measurements used:
All breakdowns are quickly diagnosed and repairs effectively made.
All assigned work orders are satisfactorily completed in the allotted time.
All discretionary time is effectively utilized.
All work is done safely, with proper PPE, with properly maintained tools
Any vehicle and/or equipment assigned is inspected for safe operation, and repairs and/or maintenance performed are made to the highest standards possible.
At the completion of the work, the area is properly cleaned of all maintenance materials and debris, and proper notification of operating personnel is made.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education, certification, experience and tooling that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities within this series is qualifying. Typical requirements for knowledge, skills, abilities and tooling would be:
Education/Training:
Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance including specialized training in the maintenance and repair as it relates to those listed within these classes.
Experience:
Equipment Mechanic I - Two years of experience and the tooling needed in performing automotive and equipment maintenance and repair duties, including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment.
Equipment Mechanic II - Four years of experience and the tooling needed in performing automotive and equipment maintenance and repair duties, including practical experience in the fields listed in this class of at least four years.
License and/or Certificate for Mechanic I & II:
Possession of, or ability to obtain by the date of employment, a valid California or Nevada Class B drivers license.
Equipment Mechanic I - At least one certificate in the major areas of diagnostics, brakes, fuel systems, diesel and gas engines, electrical and electronics, public safety required, multiple certifications preferred. Pursuit of additional certifications during employment is expected.
Equipment Mechanic II - Significant progress towards ASE masters certification required; completed ASE masters certification preferred.
