The Environmental Field Scientist plays a key role in overseeing hazardous waste handling and disposal activities across multiple project locations in the Chicago area. This position focuses on coordinating daily field operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining accurate documentation while working closely with drivers, contractors, trucking firms, and disposal facilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and conduct daily safety tailgate meetings with drivers and contractors to reinforce safe work practices and regulatory compliance.
• Manage and sign hazardous waste manifests for outbound shipments, ensuring accuracy and adherence to applicable regulations.
• Coordinate loading, transportation, and disposal activities for hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
• Track daily load counts and maintain detailed and organized field documentation for all project activities.
• Communicate regularly with contractors, trucking firms, and disposal facilities regarding daily operations and upcoming work schedules.
• Provide field oversight at multiple project locations throughout the Chicago area to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
• Support waste profiling, manifesting, remediation, and environmental field operations as needed.
• Promote a strong safety culture and adherence to environmental regulations in all field activities.

Essential Skills

• 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with current annual refresher.
• Valid driver's license and reliable means of transportation.
• DOT HazMat, DOT/IATA, or equivalent hazardous materials transportation training, or the ability to obtain this training.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a field-based environment with early morning start times, typically around 7:00 AM.
• Strong communication skills for coordinating with drivers, contractors, trucking firms, and disposal facilities.
• Strong organizational skills for tracking load counts and maintaining accurate field documentation.
• Experience with waste profiling, manifesting, remediation, or environmental field operations (preferred).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working on utility or county-level environmental projects is beneficial.
• Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations and safe handling practices.
• Ability to manage multiple project locations and prioritize tasks in a dynamic field environment.
• Attention to detail and commitment to regulatory compliance and safety.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves working at multiple project locations within DuPage County and the broader Chicago area. The position typically requires early morning start times, around 7:00 AM, to support daily operations. Work is performed outdoors and at active project sites where hazardous waste handling, loading, transportation, and disposal activities occur. The environment may include varying weather conditions and requires adherence to safety protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. The role involves regular interaction with drivers, contractors, trucking firms, and disposal facilities, fostering a collaborative and safety-focused project culture.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Yorkville, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $25.00/hr.
