Description

Job Summary

This position provides management support and project staff support and oversight to ensure the implementation of environmental and safety policies, programs, and processes, so that operations projects are managed to keep people safe and protect the environment. This includes ensuring compliance/conformance with: environmental and safety legal/regulatory requirements, including hazardous waste and materials; Corporate Environmental Protection and Safety programs and requirements; customer environmental and safety requirements; and ISO 14001/9001 procedures, and operational controls. Manages EHS program(s) and information systems to support environmental and safety goals, creating new programs or processes as necessary to achieve goals and meet company, customer, or regulatory requirements. Utilize ability to professionally interface with various levels of staff within WM, customer project site and customer corporate staff, and occasionally regulatory agency staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides on-site or off-site WMSS project staff guidance/support proactively or upon request. Helps communicate expectations related to implementing or maintaining required EHS programs/processes/procedures. Develops or assists operations in developing site-specific procedures or action plans, as needed.
  • Conducts remote or on-site initial start-up, safety and environmental assessments, and ISO audits for conformance to company procedures and for compliance purposes. Helps project staff develop corrective/preventive action and tracks any issues identified to completion.
  • Travel to customer sites to observe and assist in the implementation of EHS programs and safety best practices
  • Manages a variety of EHS projects/programs as assigned or as need is identified, which may include, but is not limited to:
  • Creation of new written programs/procedures to for implementation across WMSS to ensure regulatory compliance or conformance to customer requirements.
  • DOT Driver Qualification file compliance management.
  • ISO 14001/9001 submittals review, continual improvement, and Cross Functional Team
  • Safety Near Miss / Unsafe Condition and/or Peer Observation Program review, tracking, and data analysis
  • OSHA hour and metrics data gathering and tracking
  • Medical Monitoring Program
  • EHS Scorecard tracking, data analysis and reporting
  • Safety and/or Environmental Recognition Programs
  • Rules Book Implementation and updates
  • DriveCam Implementation, administration, and analysis
  • Vehicle title/registration/maintenance management and compliance
  • Safety or Environmental special focus or training events
  • Administers or uses of various databases and software (CYCLE, Beacon Insights, EHS Portal, Excel, DISA, CA DMV, SharePoint, etc.) to track people, assets, program conformance, regulatory compliance, and similar.
  • Develops and maintains/updates EHS training such as EHS Orientation training, OSHA-required safety, ISO or EPA-required training (e.g. RCRA) and conducts for WM staff and occasionally customer staff. May develop customer-specific training materials for internal or customer use.
  • Evaluates environmental, DOT, and/or safety regulations and provides analysis related to new or complicated, customer/ project issues to determine compliance strategy and recommend best business approach. Works with operations and customers related to compliance issues.
  • Provides guidance related to best practices for managing waste materials and improving existing procedures and practices for safe and compliant management of wastes.
  • Applies for and manages required permits.
  • Manages incidents and injuries, including cause analysis, corrective/preventive action implementation.
  • Manages customer-facing databases (e.g. safety screening databases) that track or document compliance for Strategic Account customers
  • Provides assistance to other WM entities and lines of business, including WM SES, when expertise is needed.
  • Anticipates typical problems, identifies potential or recurring problems, and takes appropriate action
  • Assists corporate personnel as directed in ensuring that company and regulatory requirements are met at project locations
  • Provides guidance to management regarding problem resolution, EHS goal setting, and programmatic improvements needed

Qualifications

A. Required Qualifications

  • B.S. of Science, Engineering, Safety, Environmental, or similar degree.
  • 10+ years Hands-on and programmatic Health & Safety/compliance experience, including some training experience and
  • 5 years Experience working within manufacturing and industrial operations

Must live and work in the U.S.

B. Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in safety or environmental management
  • 10+ years environmental and safety experience

Pay: The expected base pay range for this position across the U.S. is $110,000 - $140,000 . This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location.
