Johnson Service Group, has an immediate opportunity for a EHS Specialist for a Biotech organization in San Diego.

Direct Hire | Onsite | Salary Range:  $90K - $115K DOE

Summary: We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to support environmental, health, safety, emergency response, and compliance programs within a laboratory and technical environment.
This role will partner closely with employees and leadership to identify potential hazards, strengthen safety programs, support regulatory compliance, and help foster a strong safety culture. The ideal candidate has hands-on EHS experience within a laboratory, life sciences, manufacturing, or similarly regulated environment.
 
Responsibilities
  • Recommend improvements to processes, equipment, procedures, and workplace practices to minimize potential hazards.
  • Develop and maintain written EHS programs, procedures, policies, and guidance documents.
  • Lead employee safety training and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Develop and maintain a training matrix outlining required training, frequency, and delivery methods.
  • Conduct and support EHS audits and workplace inspections and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist with the development and continuous improvement of EHS management systems.
  • Partner with laboratory teams to implement and maintain compliance with safety SOPs.
  • Support hazardous waste management, including waste characterization, satellite accumulation area inspections, documentation, and employee training.
  • Support industrial hygiene activities, including personal air sampling, indoor air quality assessments, surface wipe sampling, and qualitative exposure assessments.
  • Participate in incident and near-miss investigations, corrective actions, and safety metric tracking.
  • Support environmental compliance, emergency response, and hazardous materials programs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety performance while understanding the business needs and operational considerations behind EHS initiatives.
  • Help drive adoption of new or updated safety policies, procedures, and programs across the organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related scientific discipline required.
  • 4+ years of related Environmental Health & Safety experience.
  • Experience managing or supporting day-to-day health, safety, environmental compliance, emergency response, and/or security activities.
  • Experience with hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and emergency response programs.
  • Experience developing and implementing EHS policies, procedures, SOPs, and training programs.
  • Experience evaluating health, safety, training, and industrial hygiene concerns and implementing appropriate solutions.
  • Experience conducting EHS audits, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Experience working in laboratory environments with chemicals and/or biohazards.
  • Experience with radioactivity and formal OSHA/safety training preferred.
  • CHMM, CSP, and/or CIH certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate detailed safety and technical information effectively across different levels of an organization.
  • Approximately 10% domestic travel required.
