The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Assessment has a vacancy.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety and welfare.

We're looking for driven, solutions-oriented, and water quality interested engineers to join the Office of Environmental Assessment within the Water Planning Division-a team dedicated to protecting Louisiana's water resources through sound science, planning, and infrastructure investment. As part of the Total Maximum Daily Loads Section, you'll play a key role in advancing water quality initiatives that support environmental protection.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE:

This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Develops advanced water quality models for TMDLs, waste load allocations, and effluent mixing, using field data, chemical analyses, and hydrologic studies to simulate pollutant impacts.
  • Applies engineering expertise to simulate hydrology and water chemistry/biology, tailoring model complexity to project needs-from simple allocations to detailed effluent mixing scenarios.
  • Identifies and integrates point and nonpoint source loads into TMDL development, contributing to scientific papers and ensuring regulatory compliance through thorough documentation.
  • Coordinates with Water Surveys Section on field survey planning, advising on data types, collection methods, quality control, and logistical needs to support modeling accuracy.
  • Reviews technical reports from internal teams, regulated facilities, and contractors, providing engineering assessments and recommending approval for EPA or DEQ distribution.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.

Domicile: East Baton Rouge

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineer Intern Applicant - Engineer 5, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

  • Engineer Intern 1- $26.44 per hour
  • Engineer Intern 2- $28.29 per hour
  • Engineer 3- $33.39 per hour
  • Engineer 4- $36.90 per hour
  • Engineer 5- $39.48 per hour
