EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's Degree from an accredited four year college or university

Minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience preferred and/or certified school counselor experience

CERTIFICATION:

Valid School Counselor Certificate by the State Board for Educator Certification

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, Local Board policy and district/campus regulations.
  • Adheres to ethical, legal, and professional standards for school counselors, including current professional standards of

competence and practice.

  • Document time and effort as required for federally funded positions to show 25% of work time is spent on duties listed as enhanced counseling services for the overall mental health and wellness of students in assigned caseload.

Enhanced Counseling Services

  1. Uses data to develop and facilitate two (2) small groups each semester, one focused on proactive academic skill development and one on responsive social/emotional skill development.

  2. Uses data to provide and document individual counseling for high-need students facing barriers to academic and social/emotional success based upon a goal identified with the student and family.

  3. Collaborates with families, administrators, teachers and outside agencies to create a written transition plan that includes follow-up support for students following emergency mental health crisis and/or discipline incidents.

  4. Provides services for students placed at the District Alternative Education Center (DAEP) including: visitation, academic success, psychoeducation focused on reason for placement, re-enrollment and transition planning.

  5. Pursues and attends additional professional development to enhance services provided to students.

6.Participates on district crisis follow-up team when deployed by Counseling & Guidance Services including: Training and planning, direct campus support, and debrief of crisis events.

Guidance Curriculum

  1. Delivers required guidance lessons to all grade levels consistent with the district's guidance plan and focused on campus needs.

  2. Collaborates across curricular areas to integrate guidance lessons into content area curriculum.

Individual Planning

  1. Guides students and their parents/guardians in individual planning to monitor and manage the student's educational and career development and related goals, including: Selecting courses, evaluating credits earned, and reviewing 4-year/personal graduation plans.

  2. Interprets and uses test scores and other data for educational planning with students, families and school personnel.

  3. Confirms that all students are included on state assessment testing rosters according to graduation requirements.

  4. Identifies and support students who meet eligibility criteria and may benefit from credit protection, credit recovery or accelerated pathways to graduation.

  5. Annually prepares students for post-secondary readiness including career interests, post-secondary options, college entrance exams, and military pathways according to current laws.

  6. Assists students through college application process using required platforms and providing necessary letters of recommendation, student records, and financial aid awareness.

Responsive Services

  1. Uses high level interpersonal skills with students to build trust and rapport.

  2. Maintains confidentiality of information and shares limits of confidentiality and disclosure requirements with students and parents/guardians prior to providing counseling services.

  3. Uses accepted theories and effective techniques to provide responsive services to individual and/or small groups of students.

  4. Refers students to campus, district and community resources to intervene on behalf of students during significant life events or crisis including: MTSS, Section 504, Special Education, outside counseling & mental health resources.

  5. Provides responsive services to students in a brief context when barriers inhibit achievement in academic, post secondary and social/emotional success.

  6. Completes NEISD Emergency Mental Health protocols and Behavior Threat Assessment documentation according to district and state guidelines for students experiencing: suicidal, homicidal, non suicidal self injury thoughts or behaviors and other emergency mental health concerns.

  7. Participates as mental health expert member of school-based threat assessment team for assigned caseload of students.

System Support

  1. Documents all services, referrals, and trainings provided to students according to district guidelines.

  2. Compiles, maintains, and files all required reports, records, and other documents.

  3. Collaborates with school and community resources to support and improve student development including: campus PTSA, student leadership organizations, at-risk student supports, and mental health support facilities.

  4. Establishes communication systems to effectively collaborate with other professionals in support of students.

  5. Advocates for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diverse student needs.

  6. Participates as a member of the campus team in maintaining accurate records pertaining to the submission of campus data to the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS).

  7. Maintains and protects confidential student cumulative records.

  8. Maintains positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.

  9. Pursues relevant professional development related to academic and responsive counseling services.

  10. Attends all required meetings as scheduled and reports to work on time each day.

  11. Maintains confidentiality of information.

  12. Reports to work on time every day.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of acceptable counseling theories for school settings.
  • Training in Solution Focused Brief Counseling and skills in applying SF in the school setting.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with students and adults.
  • Demonstrated multicultural, ethical and professional competencies in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Demonstrated ability to use good judgment and discretion in sensitive, confidential issues and projects.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the district.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to handle, or feel.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally required to drive personal vehicle in the performance of assigned tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
