Job Summary

The English Teacher provides standards-based instruction that develops students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. The role delivers engaging English language arts instruction through diverse literature, writing activities, and communication experiences while fostering an inclusive classroom environment and supporting student academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach secondary English courses using approved curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that promote reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills.
  • Provide opportunities for students to read diverse literature and write for various purposes and audiences.
  • Support the development of reading comprehension, writing, communication, and study skills.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technologies, and learning resources.
  • Provide differentiated instruction through individual and small-group learning.
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative assessments.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and maintain records of student academic progress.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and productive classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff to meet student needs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
  • Participate in curriculum planning, faculty meetings, professional development, and school initiatives.
  • Supervise students during assigned school activities and support extracurricular programs when assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in English.
  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License.
  • Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Ability to use computers and instructional technology in the classroom.
  • Strong knowledge of English Language Arts curriculum and instructional practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
  • Strong classroom management, organizational, and collaboration skills.
