DERMS Engineering Technologist - Operations and Support

The DERMS Engineering Technologist supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Duke Energy’s Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) for Behind-the-Meter and customer-sited assets. This role will serve as an operator with responsibility for monitoring distributed energy resources (DERs), evaluates alarms and grid conditions, prepares dispatch actions, and executes approved actions under the direction of authorized distribution operations personnel. The role also maintains DERMS operational readiness, operational procedures, data quality, system interfaces, and accurate records.

This role will also be providing coordination and support for technical testing and onboarding of battery original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to Client Energy’s distribution system. The operator works with OEMs and internal engineering, cybersecurity, interconnection, and distribution operations teams to validate communications, telemetry, controls, and operational behavior. This person is responsible for recommending acceptance or rejection; final production authorization remains with client Energy engineering, cybersecurity, and distribution operations.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:
Monitor DERMS dashboards, alarms, telemetry, DER availability, and grid conditions.
Support DER dispatch, curtailment, charge/discharge, and demand-response activities.
Test and onboard Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) OEMs.
Validate connectivity, telemetry, controls, alarms, certificates, and command responses.
Test charge/discharge, active/reactive power, ramp rates, limits, fail-safe and communication-loss behavior.
Troubleshoot issues involving devices, communications, configuration, data, certificates, and DERMS.
Maintain DER inventory, system data, interfaces, APIs, gateways, and integrations.
Support UAT, regression testing, system maintenance, documentation, and incident records.
Follow cybersecurity, safety, access-control, and critical-infrastructure requirements.

Qualifications

Must-Have
BS in Engineering Technology OR relevant equivalent experience.
4–6+ years with Associate Degree, or 10–15 years equivalent experience without degree.
Experience with Utility Operations, DERMS, SCADA, ADMS/DMS, Energy Storage, Power Systems, Industrial Controls, or Systems Integration.
Understanding of distribution systems, DERs, BESS, telemetry, alarms, and control-room operations.
Ability to read one-line diagrams, test scripts, technical specs, and system logs.
Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.

Preferred
BESS / smart inverter / DER gateway / OEM testing or commissioning.
IEEE 1547, IEEE 2030.5/CSIP, DNP3, Modbus, OpenADR, APIs, PKI, or ICCP.
Alarm management, UAT, regression testing, defect tracking, and incident response.
SCADA / industrial controls / networking / cybersecurity experience
