Engineering Technologist 3 - Mechanical Design Checker, W93 Systems Development and Realization (DOE/LANL)Group: W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization (Q-20-SE)Location: Los Alamos, NM | TA-3, Building 1400 | 100% OnsiteCompensation: $62-$67 per hourSchedule: 5/8 with flexibility; most of the team works a 9/80 and some work 4/10sDuration: 2 years, extension possible, conversion unlikelyPer Diem / Relocation: AvailableCitizenship: U.S. Citizenship RequiredClearance: DOE Q Clearance required; active Q strongly preferred, candidates able to obtain a Q will be reviewedStart: ASAPAbout the RoleThe W93 Systems Development and Realization group is looking for an experienced mechanical designer to join the team as a checker of design definition. The position requires a range of expertise in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD), hardware design, fabrication, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering concepts. You may also be expected to guide teams of staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects. Completed work is reviewed with the expectation of expert results without appreciable direction. You will work on technical solutions to complex and unique problems that call for ingenuity, creativity, and independence, and your solutions will frequently be original and affect the outcome of the entire project. You may be asked to mentor junior staff on Models Based Definition and GD&T.This is an opportunity to be part of the first new weapon system program in over 30 years. The Q-20 W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the newest Navy submarine launched ballistic missile weapon program. The group supports the DoD/Navy SSP and DOE/NNSA customers in defining the mission need and the corresponding technical and programmatic requirements. The W93 program collaborates closely with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Lockheed Martin Space design agencies to develop the re-entry system, ensuring safe, secure, and reliable warhead performance and a relevant nuclear deterrent. Q-20 also integrates the production agency teams (KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL) tightly into the design, qualification, and realization processes. The program is fast moving and still in the early stages of design, so these hires will be very busy updating product and design definitions. The team is looking for someone comfortable creating order out of chaos, working to quick deadlines across many moving parts.Key ResponsibilitiesServe as checker of design definition, reviewing models and drawings for form, fit, and function and for Models Based Definition (MBD)Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and verify compliance with the most recent design standardsReview product definition for producibility to meet requirements and reduce rejected productsGuide teams of staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defectsLead reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testRecommend MBD best practices and methods of improvement while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standardsSupport weapon system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definitionMentor junior staff on Models Based Definition and GD&TWork on multiple tasks for a variety of customers, supporting teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and techniciansRequired QualificationsAdvanced understanding of mechanical CAD, with experience in mechanical computer aided design, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testingExperience checking CAD models and drawings for form, fit, and function and Models Based Definition (MBD), with Creo preferredProven experience with CAD software (Creo preferred, currently Creo 12), PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), GD&T, and tolerance stack up analysis software; candidates from other CAD platforms may be considered if they can demonstrate transitioning to CreoProven mechanical design experience ensuring product definition meets requirements and producibility while reducing rejected productsFamiliarity with the application of ASME Y14 standards, with emphasis on Y14.5 (2009) and Y14.41 MBDExperience developing and interpreting 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures used to convey design intent internally and to other organizations within the National Security EnterpriseKnowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processesExperience with weapon system configuration management workflowsDemonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks for a variety of customers to ensure product definition meets requirements and design intentProven experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testsEffective written and verbal communication skills, with a record of constructive, cooperative working relationshipsIndependent time management, attention to detail and prioritization, and comfort working in a fast-paced environmentEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution, and 8 years of directly related experienceOr an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupationPreferred QualificationsExperience in drafting and design work in both weapons and non-weapons arenasExperience developing and implementing organizational design and drafting standardsPrevious model and drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security EnterpriseDOE or NNSA experienceActive Q clearanceMandatory Requirements - Read Before ApplyingBachelor's degree and 8+ years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experienceHands-on CAD experience, including checking models and drawings for form, fit, and function and MBD (Creo preferred, other platforms considered with demonstrated transition to Creo)Experience with PDMLink, GD&T, and tolerance stack up analysis softwareWorking knowledge of ASME Y14.5 (2009) and Y14.41 MBD standardsS.
