This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 3 or Engineering Technologist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the Engineering Technologist 4 level.

The Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions in support of the Laboratory's Plutonium Facility. This position supports the PIE Install Engineering Group. This group is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program on Division projects. The program includes processes, standards, training, and qualifications that are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.

The Engineering Technologist is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects are executed in full conformance with the Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by providing input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. Field Engineers expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance to the constructor through approved procedures.

Engineering Technologist 3 $106,400 - $176,000

At the Engineering Technologist 3 level, you will independently perform advanced field engineering assignments, evaluate field conditions, resolve technical and constructability issues, verify compliance with approved project documents, and coordinate solutions between design engineering and construction.

Engineering Technologist 4 $117,200 - $195,400

In addition to the responsibilities described above, Engineering Technologist 4 serves as a senior technical resource with substantial independence and latitude. Engineer Technologist 4 leads complex and multidisciplinary field and engineering activities, resolves unique or unusually complex technical issues, determines appropriate technical approaches, provides technical direction and review of others' work, mentors less-experienced personnel, and develops or improves methods and approaches used to successfully execute construction projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Advanced knowledge of construction engineering principles, practices, and methods.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and evaluating engineering design documents, drawings, specifications, and other technical documents for completeness, technical adequacy, and constructability.
• Experience interpreting construction industry specifications, construction means and methods, and applicable national codes and standards.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate engineering and technical solutions effectively, both verbally and in writing, with management, customers, engineering personnel, construction personnel, and craft personnel.
• Experience conducting field verifications of construction work to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and other applicable project requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to collaboratively identify and resolve facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field while coordinating between design engineering and construction.
• Experience coordinating the technical resolution of field conditions, design discrepancies, constructability issues, and other construction-related technical matters.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage assigned field engineering activities and prioritize multiple assignments of varying complexity.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4

In addition to the requirements above, qualification at the Engineering Technologist 4 level requires:

• Expert-level knowledge of construction engineering principles, practices, and work control methods sufficient to provide senior-level technical support for complex facility and infrastructure construction activities.
• Demonstrated experience independently planning and leading complex field engineering assignments, including establishing technical priorities and determining appropriate methods and approaches with minimal direction.
• Advanced experience leading the resolution of significant, unique, and/or complex engineering and construction issues requiring in-depth evaluation of technical requirements, field conditions, constructability, and facility operational constraints.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and develop technically defensible solutions when established or conventional approaches are insufficient to resolve complex field engineering problems.
• Experience evaluating conflicting design requirements, competing technical considerations, and complex field conditions to determine and coordinate appropriate resolutions.
• Demonstrated experience leading technical coordination across engineering disciplines and organizational interfaces to support successful execution of complex construction activities.
• Advanced experience providing technical direction, consultation, and review of work performed by Field Engineers, Construction Engineers, Engineering Technologists, and/or project personnel.
• Experience mentoring and developing less-experienced technical personnel in field engineering, construction oversight, technical problem solving, and application of engineering requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple complex assignments or projects while maintaining technical quality, compliance, schedule commitments, and organizational priorities.
• Experience developing or implementing techniques, methods, approaches, or process improvements to address complex construction engineering challenges and improve project execution.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 4:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2 A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Desired Qualifications:

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Experience supporting design and/or construction activities for nuclear, accelerator, laboratory, industrial, or other complex or high-hazard facilities.
• Experience working at Department of Energy (DOE) or National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) facilities, programs, or projects.
• Knowledge of DOE requirements, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering requirements.
• Experience reviewing engineering submittals, requests for information (RFIs), field change documentation, nonconformances, and other construction-related technical documents.
• Experience with construction work planning and control processes and facility maintenance, modification, and installation activities.
• Experience reviewing material purchase requisitions, material takeoffs, estimated quantities, and material compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
• Experience supporting procurement-related engineering activities, including preparation or review of equipment or material specifications, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
• Experience with the design, installation, modification, maintenance, commissioning, and/or turnover of facility and infrastructure systems.
• Experience supporting project controls activities, including cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, forecasts, change orders, and evaluation of technical impacts to project cost and schedule.
• Experience supporting configuration verification, system acceptance, project turnover, and construction closeout activities.
• Experience using engineering and construction software, technology, and tools applicable to facility and infrastructure project execution.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
