Highlights

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to safely and effectively operate a variety of light to medium-duty maintenance equipment in support of the upkeep of City infrastructure. Responsibilities include operating equipment at work sites, transporting equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites, and occasionally providing direction and oversight to assigned crew members.

Examples of Duties

  • Operate a variety of light to medium-duty maintenance equipment, including but not limited to asphalt mobile core drilling equipment, various hand tools, and measuring devices;
  • Assist with the operation of Jetter/Vacuum Trucks and CCTV inspection equipment in the inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of City infrastructure;
  • Assist other crews with the completion of assigned maintenance, construction, and infrastructure-related tasks;
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and pre-trip inspections; identifiy and report equipment deficiencies; and perform minor repairs or replace worn or damaged parts;

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • One year of experience operating a variety of light to medium-duty maintenance equipment.
  • Six months supervisory or crew leader experience (preferred but not required).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • the proper operation and routine maintenance of light to medium-duty maintenance equipment and related attachments;
  • occupational hazards and proper safety precautions needed to prevent and avoid accidents/injuries;
  • state and local laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to and involved in operating equipment.

Skilled in:

  • using and operating the assigned equipment or systems;
  • performing repairs and maintenance of assigned equipment;
  • using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems;
  • communicating effectively with others to convey information.

Ability to:

  • read and interpret surveyors reports, grade stakes, and other

construction documents to complete the job to

specifications;

  • judge terrain, determine the amount of cut and fill required, and correctly alter earth to desired construction design;
  • direct the work of assigned crew members;
  • work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements;
  • work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public;
  • work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others;
  • meet the mental and physical demands of the job.

Special Requirements

Special Requirements:

  • Valid N.C. Drivers License or another state and an acceptable driving record.

  • Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required within six months of hire and an acceptable driving record.
