We are seeking a hands-on Director of Engineering to lead and develop an engineering team responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of advanced heavy equipment and machinery.
This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced engineering professional who brings broad technical knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines and enjoys balancing strategic direction with hands-on technical involvement. The ideal candidate can guide engineering teams, contribute to complex design and development decisions, troubleshoot challenging technical issues, and help bring innovative products from concept through production.
Lead, mentor, and develop engineering teams across multiple technical disciplines.
Provide technical direction and oversight for product design, engineering development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Remain actively involved in engineering work, including design reviews, technical problem-solving, troubleshooting, and evaluation of engineering solutions.
Oversee product development activities from initial concept and design through prototyping, testing, validation, and production.
Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, powertrain, and controls engineering functions.
Establish engineering priorities, project objectives, and development processes to support business and product goals.
Partner with manufacturing, operations, quality, supply chain, and other cross-functional teams to ensure product designs meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
Evaluate new technologies, engineering methods, and design improvements to advance product performance and innovation.
Support resolution of complex technical challenges and drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Communicate engineering strategies, project progress, and technical recommendations to senior leadership and key stakeholders.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; advanced degree preferred.
Significant experience in engineering leadership, including experience managing or directing engineering teams.
Broad engineering knowledge across multiple disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, powertrain, or controls engineering.
Demonstrated experience leading product development, engineering design, and technical problem-solving.
Ability to balance engineering leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical involvement.
Experience with complex machinery, heavy equipment, industrial equipment, or related engineered products strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of product development processes, design reviews, prototyping, testing, validation, and manufacturing integration.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Background in construction equipment, mining machinery, off-highway vehicles, or other heavy industrial equipment.
Experience overseeing engineering teams with multiple technical specialties.
Exposure to advanced powertrain technologies, including hybrid or electric systems.
Experience supporting large-scale equipment development, product launches, or complex engineering programs.
This role offers the opportunity to shape engineering strategy and technical development for a leading global heavy equipment manufacturer. The Director will have meaningful influence over product innovation, engineering team development, and the continued advancement of complex machinery—while remaining close to the technical work and engineering decisions that drive results.
Strong collaboration, accountability, and continuous-improvement mindset.
Office-Based Engineering with Prototype and Field Visits
This role is primarily performed in an office or engineering environment and involves extended computer use, meetings, technical reviews, and minimal physical exertion.
Periodic visits to prototype facilities, suppliers, test locations, or mine sites may involve walking, standing, exposure to noise and moving equipment, varying temperatures, and uneven terrain. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when required.
Occasional travel, up to 25%.
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Any applicable annual performance bonus will be determined in accordance with the approved compensation plan.
Benefits may include:
Medical, dental, and vision insurance
Paid time off (PTO)
401(k) savings plan
Health Savings Account (HSA)
