Engineer, Tooling

When pre-production & mass production changes occur, including but not limited to Engineering Changes, Refurbishment or scope change, it's necessary for the Tooling Engineer to provide technical justification & present to the customer. Must have the ability to determine tonnage requirements, proper shear clearances, and tolerances for die punching and trimming, proper forming clearances, specify appropriate steel applications, as well as recommending coatings or other process improvements to the tooling.

Job Responsibilities:

Coordinates activities of tool design to facilitate production or procurement of tooling. Determines the most effective manufacturing process while sustaining the most efficient cost. Prepares the initial specification of tooling for specific programs and/or products. Coordinates tuning of tooling for fit and function

1. Know and understand Bowling Green Metalforming Safety, Quality & Environmental policies.
2. Utilize BGM standards for obtaining quotes for new & existing tooling with a defined Scope of Work.
3. Perform evaluation of tooling orders received. Records tool requirement data on tooling order and places requisition of tooling order.
4. Develop timing plans for tooling including but not limited to new launch, modifications, improvements, tool resourcing strategies and engineering changes.
5. Develops concepts and provides feasibility feedback for World Class Manufacturing processes.
6. Manage tool modifications for engineering changes for internal or external vendors.
7. Manage non-conformances with the supply base utilizing problem solving methods. Collaborate with tier suppliers to proactively prevent recurring issues and document lessons learned.
8. Organize and maintain Tooling and Press CAD Data in a systemic method.
9. Contacts cross functional teams & tier suppliers to follow up on procurement or production activities and to expedite movement of tools between departments or vendors.
10. Must have the ability to determine tonnage requirements, proper shear clearances, and tolerances for die punching and trimming, proper forming clearances, specify appropriate steel applications, as well as recommending coatings or other process improvements to the tooling.
11. Manage elements of the APQP criteria for tier supplier base & tool build sources during pre-production and mass production products.
12. Manage die moves in supply base (internal/ external) support resourcing strategies including participating or leading technical reviews.
13. Collaborate with Assembly Production teams on adjustments required in component parts to achieve more ideal assembly fit up, promote higher quality dimensional & weld health metrics.
14. When pre-production & mass production changes occur, including but not limited to Engineering Changes, Refurbishment or scope change, it's necessary for the Tooling Engineer to provide technical justification & present to the customer.
15. Must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time and travel on short notice (less than 24 hours).

What we are looking for:

- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or equivalent certification from a four-year college or technical school or ten years' experience in applicable role
- Journeyman card in tool and die qualification preferred
- Minimum of 7 years of Automotive process and stamping tooling experience
- Minimum of 5 years' experience liaising with outside vendors preferred
- Minimum of 7 years' experience in a manufacturing environment

Preferred qualifications:

- Computer skills; Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project Planner)
- Operational knowledge of ISO/TS16949 Core Tools
- Operational knowledge of AIAG industry standards
- Proficiency in Metallurgy of steel & applications
- Ability to interpret simulation software's (AutoForm, Dynaform, PamStamp)
- Proficiency in modeling software AutoCAD, CATIA, Teamcenter
- Proficiency of GD&T & Blueprints
- Operate standard office equipment
