JOB SUMMARY

Northrop Grumman is seeking an Engineer Structural 3 to support its Tooling department in El Segundo. The position focuses on structural analysis and engineering support for tooling fixtures, assembly work stands, lifting jigs, composite dies, drill fixtures, machine attachments, and production equipment within an aerospace fabrication environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform structural analysis using hand calculations and FEMAP/NASTRAN.
  • Conduct static and dynamic analysis of tooling fixtures and structures.
  • Prepare structural engineering analysis packages and technical reports.
  • Review analysis reports prepared by other engineers.
  • Analyze metals, non-metallic materials, and composite structures.
  • Evaluate engineering products for compliance with standards, procedures, and specifications.
  • Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Support design and engineering solutions for complex tooling and fabrication challenges.
  • Develop and conceptualize designs using NX and CATIA.
  • Create fabrication drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.1-Y14.5 standards.
  • Apply GD&T principles when interpreting and developing engineering drawings.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, management, and customer representatives.
  • Provide technical presentations and explain structural issues and solutions.
  • Support tooling fabrication and production activities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM engineering discipline.
  • Experience with structural stress analysis, including hand calculations and FEA.
  • Experience with stress analysis techniques, concepts, and practices.
  • Experience with CATIA and/or NX.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Basic understanding of GD&T and ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with medium- to large-scale tooling or production fabrication.
  • Experience involving composites, metallic structures, coatings, or manufacturing operations.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance and within a team environment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance and required special program access.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Aerospace manufacturing experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferably California, or actively pursuing PE.
  • Direct experience with tooling mechanics and stress analysis.
  • Experience with tooling fabrication and factors such as accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance with a recent investigation/periodic review within the last five years.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a structural engineer with strong stress-analysis and FEA experience, aerospace/tooling exposure, and hands-on knowledge of fabrication practices. The candidate should be comfortable working with FEMAP/NASTRAN, CATIA/NX, engineering drawings, GD&T, composites, and metallic structures, while independently solving complex engineering problems.
