Position Overview:

Power your Future with Qualus as an Protection & Control Engineer I. Protection & Control Engineers are responsible for designing protection and control systems for a variety of power system applications utilizing applicable codes, industry recognized standards, and client standards (where available). Typical protection and control designs may include, but are not limited to, system one-line diagrams, system three-line diagrams, relay panel elevation and detail diagrams, AC schematic diagrams, DC schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment elementary and wiring diagrams, bills of material, and equipment specifications. 

Responsibilities:
  • Design protection and control systems for transmission, generation, distribution, renewable, and/or industrial applications utilizing applicable codes, industry recognized standards, and client standards (where available).  
  • Prepare conceptual electrical control enclosure designs/layouts, panel elevations diagrams, protection one-line diagrams, communication system one-line diagrams, and preliminary bills of material.  
  • Create equipment and material specifications for procurement of engineered equipment as well as development of design scope and cost estimates. 
  • Develop protection and/or communication system one-line diagrams. 
  • Develop three-line diagrams in coordination with substation engineering team members. 
  • Develop panel elevation and detail diagrams. 
  • Develop AC and DC schematic diagrams. 
  • Develop equipment/panel wiring diagrams. 
  • Develop logic files and/or setting files for intelligent electronic devices, e.g. relays, SCADA RTUs, HMIs, etc. 
  • Develop drawings needed to document control system and/or communication system implementation. 
  • Prepare calculations which may include, but are not limited to, battery and charger sizing calculations, relay setting calculations, voltage drop calculations, conduit fill calculations, and AC load calculations. 
  • Prepare additional support documentation, as needed, to assist procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance of systems being designed. 
  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data. 
  • Ensure the company’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes are being followed on all design packages/deliverables. 
  • Provide testing and construction support during project implementation. Support is typically provided off-site, but on-site support may be required on a case-by-case basis. 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: BS Degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Experience: 0-3 years of experience in protection & control design or experience directly related to working with electricity, preferably in utilities. 
  • Specialized Knowledge, Certifications and Licenses: Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation is preferred. FE/EIT certification is recommended.
