Job Summary

The Engineer Assistant I and II works with private contractors to construct public utilities, streets, structures, as well as to provide other engineering support services to the residents of Fairbanks. Works with the public to take care of any issues within the City owned properties and ROW (right-of-way). Works with other government agencies, federal, state, and local as directed. This position is bargained through IBEW and reports to the City Engineer.

Essential Job Functions / Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Job Functions:

• Assist Engineers as needed and directed by the City Engineer.
• Assist the City Engineer and City Surveyor. Duties may include pounding stakes, surveying, taking measurements, inspecting streets, counting traffic, copying / scanning prints, data entry, construction inspections, drafting / CADD, GIS, sign inventory and inspection, striping inventory and inspection, storm drain inventory and inspection, working with planning staff to evaluate ADA compliance of public infrastructure, and other duties as directed by the City Engineer and City Surveyor.
• Assist and / or fill in for the QC / Impounds personnel as needed and directed by the City Engineer.
• Assist and / or fill in for the permitting personnel as needed and directed by the City Engineer.
• Independently manage City Engineering projects for projects within the ROW and for City owned facilities outside the ROW.
• Other Engineering Department duties as assigned or required as directed by the City Engineer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Candidates hired must satisfactorily demonstrate these factors during a prescribed probationary period for continued employment.

• General understanding of construction, engineering, land and surveying practices.
• Skill in college level math.
• Skill in computer applications.
• Ability to take direction from the City Engineer.
• Ability to use computer, Auto - Cad, Civil3D, calculator, and copier.
• Willingness to learn how to use survey equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Persons applying for this position must have the following:

• Associates degree preferred in a field related to Engineering and / or Surveying
• Must hold and maintain a valid State of Alaska drivers license throughout the duration of employment.

Engineer Assistant II:

• Meets requirements of Engineering Assistant I with 4 years experience at that level.
