We are seeking an experienced consultant to support the Custom Harvest team at a leading asset management firm. The team runs the firm's custom indexing and separately managed account (SMA) platform with systematic tax-loss harvesting. The consultant will embed with the team to strengthen daily operational delivery, document and improve workflows, resolve exceptions, and support automation and scale initiatives. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who can contribute from day one with minimal ramp-up.
Support day-to-day operations of the tax-loss harvesting and custom indexing book: harvest queue management, rebalance workflows, trade file generation, and post-trade reconciliation.
Assist with wash-sale monitoring and restriction management, including client-imposed constraints, restricted securities, and tax-lot-level controls.
Support account onboarding, funding, transitions, and in-kind transfers, including tax-lot ingestion and cost-basis validation with custodians.
Investigate and resolve exceptions and breaks across portfolio accounting, custodian, and order management systems; manage escalations to the appropriate owners.
Document current-state processes, identify control gaps and manual touchpoints, and recommend process improvements and automation opportunities.
Partner with portfolio management, quantitative, and technology teams to translate harvesting logic and optimizer output into controlled, auditable workflows.
Support testing of system releases and new workflows; draft procedures, runbooks, and training material for the team.
10+ years of investment operations experience; prior experience within an asset management firm is mandatory (SMA, direct/custom indexing, wealth, or institutional portfolio operations).
Hands-on knowledge of tax-loss harvesting mechanics: tax lots, cost basis, wash-sale rules, and tax-aware rebalancing.
Strong understanding of the trade lifecycle: order generation, allocation, settlement, and reconciliation across multiple custodians.
Experience with portfolio accounting, order management, and rebalancing/optimization platforms (e.g., Aladdin, Charles River, Eze, Vestmark, or comparable optimizer tools).
Track record of operating effectively as a consultant or embedded resource: self-directed, quick to ramp, and comfortable working within a client's controls and cadence.
Strong documentation and process-mapping skills; able to produce audit-ready procedures and clear stakeholder communications.
Advanced Excel; comfort with data analysis at scale (SQL or Python a strong plus).
Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field.
Based in, or able to commute to, the NY/NJ area for on-site work as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience supporting a custom indexing / direct indexing or tax-managed SMA platform at scale.
Prior consulting engagements at asset managers, SMA sponsors, or wealth platforms.
Experience with custodial platforms (Schwab, Fidelity, Pershing, BNY) and SMA sponsor programs.
CFA, CIPM, FRM, or progress toward a relevant designation; MBA a plus.
