Job Title

Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter

Essential Job Functions

  • Applies basic life support skills to triage, rescue, treat and transport injured or ill persons
  • Responds to medical emergencies
  • Provides patient care functions
  • Directs medical activities at multiple patient scenes or mass casualty incidents until relieved by qualified supervisor; performs triage, coordinates medical transportation of the sick and injured
  • Protects property from water and smoke
  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls
  • Leads out hose line, selects and operates hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire
  • Other related duties, as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience

One (1) year experience as an EMT Basic

Licenses/Certifications

Licensed Emergency Medical Technician

Licensed Firefighter

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the appropriate scope of care as defined by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, and Alcorn State University EMS policies and procedures

Knowledge of stress response and methods to ensure personal well being

Knowledge of body substance isolation

Excellent communication skills, verbal, written and interpersonal

Ability to effectively deal with trauma and serious illness in emergency situations

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Ability to exercise sound independent judgment

Ability to anticipate/identify problems, taking initiative to prevent/correct them

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel

Ability to operate specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed, in accordance with federal, state and local law, regulations and standards

Ability to maintain accurate records

Ability to handle telephone communications professionally and efficiently with careful regard to the divulgence of information
