General Description
The Orange County Emergency Services Department has an opening for Permanent Emergency Medical Technicians. An employee in this classification is primarily responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls received by the Orange County Emergency Services Department, and administering non-emergency and/or emergency medical care at the Basic EMT level. Work involves communication with the public and co-workers at the EMS scene and driving the emergency vehicle to the hospital, obtaining vitals and assessing the patient(s) in the pre-hospital setting.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the EMS Supervisor with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies, protocols and procedures in the performance of duties. Supervision of others is not required of this position. Does related work as required.
The EMT Interviews (Assessment Center) will be held on Wednesday, August 19th from 0800-1700. If selected for participation, candidates will receive notification of location and specific report times.
The hiring range is based on the Orange County Step Plan for Emergency Services. The Step Plan is based on years of experience, education and certifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND six (6) months of work experience as an Emergency Medical Technician or closely related work experience in the medical field; OR
Possession of or ability to obtain EMT Certification recognized in the State of North Carolina. You must have your EMT certification on your start date in the position.
An employee may be hired as an EMT - Basic Trainee (Starting salary $42,744) if they do not meet the minimum qualifications. Upon successful completion of a probationary period in accordance with the Orange County Personnel Ordinance, the salary will increase to the entry salary of an EMT - Basic.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a current Driver's License valid in the State of North Carolina.
All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a Fit-for-Duty Assessment, pre-employment drug testing and SBI background check. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
In accordance with Section 28 of the Orange County Code of Ordinances, and/or relevant State and Federal statutes, candidates for employment may be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check based on the job responsibilities of the position. A fingerprinting check is conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and a criminal history background check is conducted by an authorized Federal or State regulatory agency to determine eligibility for appointment. Employment is contingent upon successful clearance through these checks, which are mandated for certain roles depending on the nature of the job and applicable laws.
Further, all offers of employment are contingent upon the satisfactory verification of your eligibility for employment, successful completion of the required pre-employment testing and/or screening, including drug testing when required and the submission and approval of all new hire documentation completion of your new hire paperwork.
Participation in the County Drug and Alcohol Screening program is required.
REQUIRED ORIENTATION AND TRAINING
As a new hire, you are required to attend the New Employee Orientation. New Employee Orientation will be Monday-Friday 8am-5pm,September 21st to October 21, 2026.
In-service training for ALL EMS staff is held on Tuesdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
