Embedded Software Engineer

Indianapolis, Indiana

Onsite

Monday through Friday

Standard workday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

$76.15/hr Position Summary

• Design, develop, and maintain software that operates directly on hardware systems.
• Work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of embedded systems.
• Support development of embedded firmware and wireless communication solutions with a focus on RF/Sub-GHz/Z-Wave technologies.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software and firmware.
• Integrate software with embedded hardware platforms.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers on system design and troubleshooting.
• Support wireless communication implementations and enhancements.
• Develop and maintain bootloaders and firmware update systems.
• Implement and support firmware security features.
• Contribute to firmware architecture, testing, documentation, and software lifecycle processes.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.
• Strong experience with:
• Embedded C
• Bare-metal firmware
• RTOS-based firmware
• ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
• Interrupt-driven architectures
• DMA, timers, watchdogs, GPIO, UART, SPI, and I2C
• Bootloaders and firmware update systems
• Debugging using J-Link, SWD, and GDB
• Low-power firmware design

Experience with wireless communication technologies, including:

• RF
• Sub-GHz communications
• Z-Wave

Experience with:

• Z-Wave
• Proprietary sub-GHz protocols
• Mesh networking
• Low-power wireless sensor networks
• RF coexistence
• OTA firmware updates over wireless

Ability to:

• Work independently
• Communicate clearly
• Document decisions
• Interface effectively with hardware engineers
• Assess schedules and technical risks realistically

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with:
• Silicon Labs wireless SDKs
• Modifying MAC/PHY behavior
• Implementing custom protocol layers

Experience with:

• Simplicity Studio
• Silicon Labs Gecko SDK
• Silicon Labs wireless stack APIs
• Z-Wave 700/800 series
• SmartStart
• S2 security
• OTA DFU mechanisms
• Zniffer packet analysis
• PTI packet tracing

Security-related experience including:

• Secure boot
• Firmware signing
• Key provisioning
• Encrypted OTA updates
• Secure pairing/authentication
• Replay protection
• Secure storage of credentials

Experience with:

• Modular firmware architecture
• State-machine design
• Event-driven systems
• Git workflows
• CI/CD for firmware
• Automated testing
• Hardware abstraction layers

RF engineering knowledge, including:

• Antenna and layout awareness
• RF sensitivity optimization
• Link-budget analysis
• Sub-GHz propagation behavior
• EMC/EMI troubleshooting
• FCC/CE certification support
• Spectrum analyzer and VNA usage
