Job Summary
The Embedded Software Engineer 2 will support the verification and validation of embedded controls and software for advanced electrification systems used in mobile equipment and stationary power applications. This role focuses on developing, maintaining, and operating Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environments using MATLAB/Simulink, OPAL-RT, and dSPACE to identify software and controls issues early in the development lifecycle. The engineer will create automated regression tests, analyze software behavior, and collaborate with embedded controls and software development teams to validate new features and support software releases. The ideal candidate will have experience with MATLAB/Simulink, programming or scripting, and embedded systems testing, along with a strong willingness to learn new HIL technologies and control systems.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain real-time electrification plant models using MATLAB/Simulink to support embedded controls verification and Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation.
- Configure, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain OPAL-RT and dSPACE HIL test benches, including hardware, harnesses, software configurations, and test environments.
- Develop requirements-based HIL test plans and test cases, create automated regression tests using Python or similar programming languages, and execute manual and automated software release testing.
- Analyze test results, investigate software and controls failures, document defects, and collaborate with embedded software and controls engineers to reproduce issues, debug functionality, and verify corrective actions.
- Support CAN/J1939 communication diagnostics, fault injection, ECU integration testing, and HIL bench commissioning while maintaining test traceability, documentation, and standardized verification processes.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- 24 years of relevant experience in embedded software, controls engineering, software verification, simulation, or related engineering activities. Relevant internships are accepted.
- Recent graduates with a relevant Master's degree in Engineering may also be considered.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink for model-based development, simulation, or control system modeling.
- Experience with at least one programming or scripting language, such as C, C++, or Python.
- Understanding of embedded software development, verification, validation, and testing methodologies.
- Ability to analyze technical requirements, develop test cases, execute testing, and document results.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with controls, software, systems, and test engineers.
- Strong technical communication, documentation, organization, and time management skills.
- Willingness and ability to learn new HIL hardware, software tools, machine applications, and control systems.
- Ability to work independently on technical problems while communicating progress and findings to the broader engineering team.
- Ability to work 100% onsite in Mossville, Illinois.
Preferred Qualifications- Hands-on experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, particularly using OPAL-RT or dSPACE platforms.
- Experience developing or modifying real-time plant models using MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience creating automated regression testing frameworks or scripts using Python.
- Familiarity with CAN/J1939 communication protocols, ECU integration, fault injection, and embedded diagnostics.
- Experience with embedded controls verification, software release testing, and requirements-based test development.
- Knowledge of electrification systems, electric powertrains, battery systems, motor controls, or industrial electronic control systems.
- Experience commissioning HIL test benches, maintaining hardware configurations, or troubleshooting simulation environments.
- Familiarity with test traceability, defect tracking, regression testing, and software quality assurance practices.
- Experience supporting automotive, heavy equipment, industrial machinery, or stationary power applications.
