Job Description

The Material, Chemical, and Computational Sciences (MCCS) directorate is seeking an Area Work Supervisor to support work in the new flagship scale-up facility for the Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI). The Energy Materials and Processing at Scale (EMAPS) facility, located on the South Table Mountain (STM) campus of the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), will house a broad range of research from all directorates at the lab to meet CMEI goals for accelerating the scale-up of laboratory-scale innovations into market-relevant prototypes and competitive manufacturing processes for critical minerals and electronic and functional materials. The Area Work Supervisor will serve a critical role in the EMAPS Research Operations team, working with NLR research teams, EMAPS Research Operations, matrixed support staff, as well as industrial, academic, and other National Lab partners to facilitate project start up, and safe and impactful research activities in EMAPS.

The objective of this position is mission-focused, customer-oriented support, and is a service role to enable successful research in EMAPS. The successful candidate will report to the EMAPS Research Operations Manager (ROM) and help ensure all research and operational activities in their assigned work area are coordinated and successfully enabled within the framework of applicable policies and procedures. Initially, this role will focus on establishing Phase 1 research labs in EMAPS, including supporting and coordinating laboratory fit out, optimization and coordination of laboratory space and early project starts. Future scope will include enabling safe and secure research operations, and managing project and equipment turnover. EMAPS will have a compute first approach for AI driven workflows and this role will work with researchers and other AI/AE support roles to ensure successful application of autonomous workflows in research labs. Key research areas for EMAPS include electronic materials prototyping and processing, membranes and advanced separations, thermal and non-thermal processing, performance enhanced chemicals, batteries, power electronics, and industrial process innovation. 

This position is based in Golden, Colorado, at the South Table Mountain Campus. The successful candidate will be expected to work primarily on site.

Key responsibilities:

• Maintain awareness of all laboratory activities in assigned spaces including research, maintenance, modification, construction, audits, assessments, surveys, tours, visits, drills, and exercises.  

• Routinely inform the EMAPS Research Operations Manager (ROM) and other team members of area status.  Weekly operational support coordination, planning, tracking, and communicating at relevant meetings. Ensure the relevant sections of the Plan of the Week (POW) dashboard are correct and accurate. 
• Support the development and execution of emergency response procedures with the EMAPS ROM, EMAPS Research Operations Director, EMAPS Facility Manager, and NLR Laboratory Protection.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning by sharing lessons learned, best practices, and demonstration of NLR's 8 Safety Culture Principles.

Project Support and Coordination:

• Assist researchers and external partners with planning and implementation of their activities, providing input on the EMAPS capabilities, capacities, rules, requirements, and controls credited with preventing/mitigating hazardous conditions in the EMAPS Hazard Analysis Review (HAR). Support the HAR Change Notice process.
• Work closely with research team members to enable project success by coordinating required resources from EMAPS Operations, NLR Mission Support organizations (e.g. Site Operations, Environment, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q), Information Technology), and/or external companies.
• Be responsive in answering questions, addressing issues, and providing necessary information. Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to prioritize major objectives on short notice as work evolves.
• Assist in writing Research Activities in coordination with EHS&Q and appropriate research SMEs. Serve as a Design Coordinator in Work Planning and Control (WPC) and ensure WPC Management of Change and/or Design Engineering processes are appropriately activated and executed. Ensure all activities and assets in assigned space are properly authorized in WPC.
• Coordinate with research, operations, and stakeholders regarding maintenance outages, construction projects, and other impactful events to minimize research disruption.
• Work with Facility Quality Manager, ESH&Q, and management to report/screen/execute corrective actions for safety-related events.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

• Prior experience working as a laboratory or operations manager, or other significant coordination and oversight experience.
• Demonstrated experience operating and/or maintaining complex research equipment.
• Ability and willingness to follow all safety, security, and NLR policies and procedures. Experience in promoting a strong safety culture amongst colleagues.
• Experience in work area oversight ensuring all requirements are implemented and met on an ongoing basis, including safety, training, and work authorization.
• Demonstrated ability to bring new knowledge into projects improving safety and efficiency. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
• Experience in pilot scale operations or other relevant hazards (general compressed gas and pressure system safety, toxic and hazardous chemical use, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in related field- Chemistry or Engineering preferred.
• Demonstrated success supporting diverse customers in a research laboratory environment, maintaining positive customer relationships, communicating timelines, and ensuring a safe work environment.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Project Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $76,600 - $126,400
