    Position Summary:

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education and building Principal, the elementary special education teacher will facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting instruction and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; a high level of collaboration with their colleagues, and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Utilize a variety of research-based intervention strategies, continually assessing student response to intervene and make modifications as needed to ensure all children are successful.
    • Act as a designated case manager by preparing for, participating in, and ensuring IEP implementation according to the school process.
    • Comply with Medicaid billing procedures.
    • Assist students in meeting self-help, health and behavior needs including toileting and personal care needs.
    • Maintain accurate and timely records, including collecting and recording data relative to student performance on individual goals and objectives.
    • Comply with state and district policy on the use of seclusion and restraint.
    • Maintain effective communication and relationships with students, parents, administrators, school personnel and agency representatives, while maintaining confidentiality at all times.
    • Comply with all Michigan and Federal Special Education law/requirements and follow all SJPS Board policies/procedures.
    • Provide home-based activities, when appropriate.
    • Direct paraprofessionals assigned to programs or specific students.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or building Principal.
