POSITION:  Special Education Life Skills (Self-Contained) Teacher

REPORTS TO:Special Education Manager

POSITION TYPE: 10-month
 

START DATE: 26-27 School Year

COMPENSATION: Starting at $64,000 annually

26-27 STIPEND: Up to $5,000 (Certification Required) 

SIGNING BONUS: Up to $4,000

In a TEACHER INCENTIVE ALOTTMENT ELIGIBLE* COURSE:TIA teachers can earn up to $102,800.

YES Prep is also a TEA Teacher Incentive Allotment approved district. Teachers in eligible courses can earn up to an additional $32,000 a year if designated under TIA  based on their performance on our Instructional Excellence Rubric and student growth for 5 years if they remain in the classroom.

This means that based on our teacher salary scale and TIA designation payouts, a TIA designated teacher could earn the following:

• 1 year of experience: $91,800
• 5 years of experience: $96,800
• 10 years of experience: $99,800
• 15 years of experience: $102,800

We serve the students of Houston, Texas, the 4th largest city across the United States. There are over 20 public-school districts and other great public charter school options  within Houston’s city limits serving our increasing population.

THE ROLE

As a Life Skills Teacher, some of the work and responsibilities will include:

• Developing rigorous lessons by internalizing and using alternate curriculum to achieve jaw-dropping student achievement results while maximizing inclusive practices and post-secondary preparedness
• Setting ambitious goals with your students and monitoring their progress while encouraging them through frequent and persistent feedback
• Tracking student growth and using data and feedback from coaches to create student growth plans when needed for student achievement concerns
• Building transformative relationships with students and families by providing regular, and consistent, communication with parents via phone or video conference, email, or district-approved website
• Creating a physical classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
• Collaborating with Teaching Assistants to work through daily lesson plans and add resources when needed to fit students’ needs.
• Leading Teaching Assistants on the implementation of lessons and learning structures (i.e., stations) in the classroom
• Meeting regular deadlines for planning daily lessons, submitting grades, and submitting/ filing work samples
• Working on a team of teachers and leaders to provide consistency, support, and accountability to all students
• Working with content teams in Professional Development to norm on and improve student learning
• Completing compliance tasks that include but are not limited to: writing accurate, aligned, data-driven IEPs for students on your caseload; updating service logs; updating IEP progress reports, etc.
• Scheduling and facilitating Community-Based Instruction (CBI) for qualifying students on a predetermined cadence
• Completing supervision duties on campus that support student safety including but not limited to morning duty, lunch duty, dismissal, detention, and afterschool duty
• Growing professionally in your craft of teaching by both receiving and giving feedback on a consistent basis from SpEd Manager, School Leader, Administration Team
• Executing TELPAS Alt and STAAR Alt 2 assessments in alignment with guidance provided from the district and students’ IEPs
• Persisting in the face of challenges, learning from mistakes, and setting a strong example of character for your students
• Being available by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with campus leaders, collaborators, students, and/or parents
• Providing personal care services as needed
• Additional duties as assigned

MUST HAVES

• Experience with Life Skills programming or similar settings
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution
• At least 3 years of exemplary Special Education teaching experience
• Outstanding record of student achievement results
• Hold a valid Texas Educator Special Education Certification 
• Hold a valid Texas Educator Certification in Core Content
• Belief in and commitment to the mission and core value of YES Prep Public Schools
• Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback
• Demonstrated ability to work on a team
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks and initiatives at once
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

NICE TO HAVES

• Bilingual (Spanish)
• Experience with teacher supervision (as a department head, mentor, or coach)
• Strong knowledge of contributing factors that lead to an effective Life Skills teacher
• Experience planning and delivering professional development to adults
• Experience teaching Life Skills at both the elementary and secondary levels
