Elementary School Assistant Principal Magnet Schools
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Schools and the Magnet School Principal, to assist in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of an Elementary Magnet School to promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, applicable federal and state law, and any orders of the federal court in the District's desegregation case that may be applicable to the position. To assist the principal in the development and launching the Magnet programs, including implementation of such legal obligations relating to such programs as may be required by orders of the federal court in the District's desegregation case. To provide leadership in program development and improvement, as well as in professional staff development. To serve as principal in the absence of the principal.
Essential Functions
- Coordinates the Magnet Program with the school's administration, staff, students, parents and the District office.
- Assists in recruiting staff suited to a magnet school.
- Assists in recruiting families to attend the magnet.
- Assists with the development, launches, and administration of the Core and Magnet programs consistent with District goals and objectives.
- Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and to learn new approaches or strategies to teaching.
- Assist in coordinating the work of school staff and District program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs associated with the magnet program and improve teaching practices.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students' needs, including students with special needs.
- Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures student conduct conforms to the school's standards and District policies.
- Supervises and evaluates teaching staff and other building employees in accordance with the District's evaluation plan and makes recommendations regarding goals, areas needing improvement, and continued employment.
- Assists in the budgetary and financial affairs of the school consistent with school district policies.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Work Schedule
Standard administrator work schedule as set forth in the Administrative Unit Contract.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates and encourages vision, creativity and growth related to the magnet theme and curricula.
- Ability to work closely with the Magnet School Principal.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiating instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation, and staff supervision.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education..
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to assist in the development and implementation projects-specifically launching a whole school magnet.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Certification/License:
- [State] State Certification as required for positions.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education and Experience
- Bachelors and Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, in Educational Administration or related fields
- Sixth year, doctorate, or other planned program in related fields preferred.
- Five years of successful teaching experience; five years of experience in a site-administrative capacity at a magnet school preferred
- Demonstration of expertise in the area of curriculum and instruction
- Possession of personal qualities essential for leadership of faculty and student body and for the development of teamwork with administrative colleagues and for confidence from Board of Education and the community.
