Job Title: Library Media Specialist

Location: Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Reports To: Building Principal and Director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction

Position Summary

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in the development and implementation of the school library program. This role involves collaborating with teachers, administrators, and students to support the instructional goals of the school, promote information literacy, and cultivate a love of reading and learning. This will be for our 4 Elementary Sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the MPSD Library Media Specialist Team.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy skills and resources into the curriculum.
  • Assist in the selection of instructional materials and resources that support the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Develop and deliver library-based instruction on research skills, digital literacy, and information evaluation.
  • Manage the library''s collection, including selecting, acquiring, and cataloging materials.
  • Regularly assess the relevance and currency of the collection, making recommendations for additions and withdrawals.
  • Maintain accurate records of library holdings and circulation statistics.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and their educational applications.
  • Provide training and support to students and staff on the use of library resources, digital tools, and online databases.
  • Manage digital resources and subscriptions, ensuring access for students and staff.
  • Assist students with research inquiries, providing guidance on search strategies and source evaluation.
  • Foster a culture of critical thinking and information literacy skills development.
  • Promote ethical use of information and respect for copyright guidelines.
  • Partner with teachers to design and implement inquiry-based learning experiences.
  • Promote the library program and its resources to the school community.
  • Maintain an organized and welcoming library environment conducive to learning and exploration.
  • Oversee circulation services, including check-in, check-out, and overdue materials.
  • Manage the library budget, including purchasing and expenditure tracking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, including or enrolled in all courses to meet credential requirements.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Wisconsin DPI license. Licensure of 1902 - Library Media Specialist License

The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day.

The demands of extended work days (coverage of building activities and extracurricular activities, etc.) requires a high level of physical endurance. This job requires the ability to handle and balance multiple demands at the same time.

Language Skills

Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions, including procedures, safety guidelines, and district policies. Ability to complete basic written communication such as reports, logs, or correspondence as required by the position. Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, staff, students, and the public, and respond appropriately to questions or concerns. Demonstrates clear and respectful communication in both verbal and written forms. Performs all duties in accordance with district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect/analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
