Job Description
Position Summary: This position performs skilled tasks in the operation and in the diagnosis, mechanical repair, maintenance, renovation, and installation of electrical equipment and systems. The Electrician exercises the use of judgment in the evaluation of electrical systems and the recommendation of repairs.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Employment duties will include, but not be limited to the following:
- Responding to building maintenance complaints and troubleshoot problems.
- Performing preventive maintenance tasks, such as equipment checks, cleaning, lubrication, and repairs, consistent with equipment manuals and current standards.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot an repair electrical motors, generators, controls systems and related electrical and mechanical equipment involving up to 480V AC or DC
- Supports small projects
- Maintain, alter and repair power appliances, light machinery, lighting fixtures, electrical circuits in existing facilities and residential; install fixtures and appliances in renovation and turnover projects
- Responding to power outage complaints, diagnosing problems, and keeping associates informed.
- Working with various electrical control devices, including electronic controls, air compressors, UPS, and fire stats.
- Lifting or carrying objects up to 100 pounds and working indoors or outdoors in extreme temperatures.
- Advising on upgrading or replacement needs and assisting in the development of recommendations.
- Installing new systems and components.
- Planning and performing effectively in a multi-task environment, meet objectives and deadlines, and exercise independent judgment.
- Maintaining effective working relationships within and across departments.
- Preparing time and material estimates as required.
- Supervising work performed by the Manager of Building Maintenance.
- Performing periodic inspections of work areas, buildings, and related structures and maintaining them in accordance with current, recognized standards.
- Responding to student and group issues in a supportive, professional, timely, and problem-solving manner
- Abiding by and complying with university policies and procedures.
- Maintain, alter and repair existing wiring in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC)
- Performing other duties or special assignments as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The General Maintenance Tech will need:
- The ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively in English (written and spoken)
- The ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to electrical construction and maintenance, including related mechanical equipment such as controls, pumps, motors, compressors, and emergency power generators.
- The ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and control wiring diagrams.
- The ability to be available at all hours for emergency service, as well as the ability to work overtime and participate in on-call rotation.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and the NEC (National Electric Code).
- The ability to practically apply practical application of recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety and security.
- Knowledgeable in basic practices employed in the building trades.
- The ability to frequently use hand and power tools, electrical testing devices, shop equipment, multiple controls, and fine adjustments as needed.
- The ability to walk and climb stairs and provide manual labor necessary to fulfill job functions. Many buildings have multiple floors with stairs and no elevators.
- The ability to work in environments with extreme temperature and humidity common in Florida and may work in buildings without air conditioning, heating, or other comforts. May work in areas that are dusty, noisy, and areas that may have unpleasant odors.

Required Qualifications:
Education: Minimum high school diploma or GED and Electrical Journeyman License is mandatory for this position. Ability to read and understand complex wiring and control system diagrams. Ability to use diagnostic tools with differing degrees of complexity.
Experience: Five (5) years hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, repair and renovation of electrical systems and devices, plus experience in emergency power generators and electric, DDC and other related control devices.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University's auto insurance carrier.
Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
