Purpose

This position is responsible for examining drawings to ensure code compliance, supervising electrical inspectors, and managing the work program for inspecting electrical systems to ensure code compliance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; processes employee concerns and problems, directs work, counsels, disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance to field inspectors and other city departments.
  • Reviews permit plans for code compliance and interpretation of the electrical code.
  • Addresses electrical issues directed to the city by engineers, contractors, architects, other city departments, and members of general public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED equivalent, with five (5) years of journey-level electrician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires State of Georgia Unrestricted Electrical Contractors License.

Requires ICC Certification as Electrical Inspector and Electrical Plans Examiner.

Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history.

Additional Requirements

Background investigation, including a supervised drug screen, post-offer/pre-employment medical screen, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

Additional Information

Minimum Standards

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, International Building Codes, and National Fire Prevention Association Codes. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied plan review and inspection duties. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to ensure that electrical plans and installations meet minimum code requirements. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of Savannah residents and visitors.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, engineers, contractors, utility personnel, and members of the general public. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, motivate personnel, resolve problems, and justify decisions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and in the field.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over the Electrical Inspector.
