  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 12 months
  • Pay Rate: $45.00 $50.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Travel Requirements: With prior manager approval, mileage/travel expenses outside of the primary work location may be submitted for reimbursement.

Job Summary

This Electrical Engineer role sits within the Continuous Monitoring Operations team, under Asset Performance, and is focused on piloting and deploying new sensor-based technologies. The team works with machine learning models applied to sensor and smart meter data from the grid to identify problems, determine their origin, and trigger field investigations. The role centers on making sense of large volumes of sensor data interpreting alerts generated by ML tools, locating issues within the grid, and driving actionable insights for field operations and asset management teams. The organization is looking for a strong Electrical Engineer with solid power systems fundamentals, an investigative mindset, and the curiosity to learn new tools including recent graduates, as training will be provided for the specific work of this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret Smart Meter data and predictive alerts, translating results into actionable insights for field operations and asset management teams to predict and prioritize transformer defects and overhead/underground electrical line defects.
  • Work with large datasets (e.g., historical defect data, inspection records, and operational data) to improve model accuracy and reduce false positives.
  • Collaborate with field operations, Protection & Control, and engineering teams to validate machine learning driven predictions.
  • Analyze sensor data coming from the grid, identify where issues are occurring, and support field investigation efforts.
  • Apply thorough investigative skills to determine root causes of grid anomalies flagged by ML tools and sensor alerts.

Required Skills

  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals with a focus on power systems and knowledge of how the grid works.
  • Familiarity with electric distribution line equipment, protective device settings, electric distribution operations, and distribution power flow analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills and an investigative mindset the curiosity and drive to understand why something is happening.
  • Ability to work with and learn new tools; software savvy.
  • Clear communication skills.

Education Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering required.

Required Experience

  • 0 5 years of experience; recent graduates with strong power systems fundamentals will be considered.
  • Experience working with large datasets (e.g., historical defect data, inspection records, and operational data) to improve model accuracy and reduce false positives.
  • Experience collaborating with field operations, Protection & Control, and engineering teams to validate machine learning driven predictions.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Local candidates only 5 days onsite at the San Ramon Conference Center.
  • PPE will be required at some point; PPE expenses may be submitted for reimbursement with prior manager approval.
  • Extra monitors and docking station must be vendor-provided or personal.
  • Client laptop will be provided; in case of delays, the supplier is expected to provide or assist in providing a device to start the assignment.

Important Notes

  • Interview process is one round; the key evaluation criterion is an investigative mindset. Candidates must be prepared to ask questions during the interview.
  • There is potential for conversion to a permanent role.
  • Candidates with more than 5 years of experience are not being considered for this role.
