    Description

    Title: Electrical Engineer – Optoelectronics/Photonics

    Department: Photonics Division

    Location: Bedford, MA (On-site)

    About the Role

QCi is seeking a hands-on Electronics Engineer to lead PCB design, component selection, and electrical interface development for electro-optic, optoelectronic, photonic, and RF modules. The engineer will translate customer requirements in the SCD into working hardware, taking designs from component selection and circuit development through prototype build and test, qualification, and release to manufacturing. This work requires close collaboration with optical, mechanical, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure each design meets performance requirements and can be built reliably.

    What You’ll Do

    Electromechanical Integration & Design

    • PCB Design and Electrical Development
    • Create schematics and PCB layouts, lead design reviews, and release designs for electro-optic, optoelectronic, photonic, and RF modules.
    • Select and evaluate active and passive electrical and thermal-control components, including transimpedance amplifiers, microcontrollers, PID controllers, TEC controllers, ADCs, DACs, power supplies, connectors, and protection devices.
    • Design controlled-impedance traces, differential interfaces, power distribution, grounding networks, and low-noise analog circuits as needed.
    • Develop electrical interfaces for butterfly packages, ceramic interposers, connectors, and wire- or ribbon-bonded assemblies.
    • Prototype Evaluation and Testing
    • Design and build laboratory setups to bring up prototype boards and verify electrical and optoelectronic performance.
    • Develop and execute test plans using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.
    • Troubleshoot board- and module-level issues, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
    • Analyze test data, compare measured results with design predictions, and confirm that the design meets performance requirements.
    • Product Integration and Manufacturing Support
    • Work with optical and mechanical engineers to integrate PCBs, interposers, connectors, thermal-control hardware, and other electronics into complete assemblies.
    • Participate in design-for-manufacturing reviews and define assembly, inspection, and electrical test requirements.
    • Prepare and maintain design documentation, bills of materials, test procedures, and work instructions.
    • Support product qualification and reliability testing in accordance with applicable customer and industry requirements.
    • Support the transfer of released designs to manufacturing and provide hands-on production support for troubleshooting, yield improvement, and component changes.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
    • 5+ years of experience in PCB or electronic hardware development.
    • Experience in schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring-up, troubleshooting, and design verification.
    • Experience with Altium Designer, KiCad, OrCAD, or an equivalent EDA tool.
    • Experience in RF, microwave, or high-speed circuit design, including controlled impedance, differential signaling, signal integrity, and S-parameter measurements.
    • Experience designing electronics for lasers, photodiodes, TECs, or optical receivers.
    • Experience selecting and evaluating electronic components for performance, reliability, availability, lifecycle status, and cost.
    • Strong hands-on laboratory skills, including test setup development, prototype bring-up, measurements, and hardware troubleshooting.
    • Ability to plan experiments, analyze results, document conclusions, and communicate findings clearly.
    • Ability to work on-site and collaborate effectively in a cross-functional product development environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with butterfly packages, optical transceivers, laser or detector modules, or hybrid assemblies.
    • Familiarity with wire bonding, ceramic interposers, hermetic packaging, laser welding, or fiber attachment.
    • Experience developing products for aerospace, defense, telecommunications, or other high-reliability applications.
