Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage Power Distribution

Location: Plano, TX
Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Salary: $100,000–$119,000 annually

Experience: 4+ years of power distribution design experience

Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage Power Distribution for a direct hire opportunity in Plano, TX. This position will support the design and engineering of custom switchgear, switchboards, and power distribution systems for industrial, utility, and mission-critical applications.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with medium-voltage (MV) equipment in the 5kV–35kV class, including switchgear and protective relaying, along with experience performing or leading short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies.

This role will collaborate closely with electrical and mechanical engineering, manufacturing, testing, quality, and field service teams to develop safe, reliable, code-compliant, and manufacturable power distribution solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer custom medium- and low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and power distribution systems.
  • Develop electrical designs for 5kV–35kV medium-voltage equipment, including switchgear and protective relaying applications.
  • Analyze project proposals, customer requirements, specifications, and bid packages to develop appropriate power distribution solutions.
  • Perform or lead short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Develop and interpret electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
  • Develop engineering drawings and electrical documentation using AutoCAD Electrical and/or SolidWorks Electrical.
  • Select and specify electrical components based on system requirements, applicable codes, equipment ratings, and project specifications.
  • Generate and maintain accurate bills of materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation.
  • Evaluate alternative components and design solutions based on performance, availability, cost, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to reduce system complexity, manufacturing costs, and production lead times.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering and production teams to develop practical and manufacturable solutions.
  • Support manufacturing, testing, quality, and field service teams throughout design implementation.
  • Troubleshoot technical, manufacturing, testing, and field-related engineering issues.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable NEC, NFPA, IEEE, UL, and other industry requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform additional engineering responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in industrial, utility, or mission-critical power distribution design.
  • Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage equipment (5kV–35kV class).
  • Experience with medium-voltage switchgear and protective relaying.
  • Experience performing or leading short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical and/or SolidWorks Electrical.
  • Experience interpreting electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, layouts, specifications, and customer drawings.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution systems and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • NEC (NFPA 70)
    • NFPA 70E
    • IEEE C37 series
    • IEEE 1584
    • UL switchgear and switchboard standards
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, production, testing, quality, and field personnel.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with arc-resistant medium-voltage switchgear in accordance with IEEE C37.20.7.
  • Experience with data center power architectures, including 2N, distributed redundant, and catcher configurations.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 110 emergency power systems.
  • Experience integrating UL 9540 energy storage systems.
  • Utility interconnection and coordination experience.
  • Experience supporting switchgear or switchboard manufacturing, testing, commissioning, or field service.
  • Experience designing power distribution systems for mission-critical or data center environments.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to work within office, engineering, and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to move throughout manufacturing, testing, and shop environments as required.

Work Environment

This position may work across engineering offices, manufacturing facilities, production shops, testing areas, and commercial or industrial environments. The role requires collaboration with engineering and manufacturing personnel and may involve time on the production floor supporting design implementation, testing, and troubleshooting.
