An industrial automation employer is seeking an early-career electrical engineer to help prepare and maintain the electrical documentation used to build automated equipment and production systems. Working with the Controls Engineering Manager and experienced engineers, you will complete assigned design work, use established engineering methods, and build practical knowledge of machine electrical standards. AutoCAD Electrical and accurate hardware documentation are central to this position.

Responsibilities

• Plan assigned work with your manager and mentors, track deadlines, and raise questions, technical concerns, or schedule issues promptly.
• Help develop machine electrical designs that balance safe operation, reliability, serviceability, ease of fabrication, and installed cost. Evaluate components according to project needs without relying on a single supplier.
• Use customer requirements, equipment layouts, controls architecture, and input/output information to prepare electrical deliverables with engineering guidance.
• Produce and revise schematics, enclosure layouts, distribution and network drawings, I/O documentation, material lists, cable and terminal schedules, device identification, and installation details in AutoCAD Electrical or comparable software.
• Document power distribution, motors and drives, control and safety circuits, industrial communications, grounding, bonding, and field wiring within your assigned scope.
• Coordinate electrical interfaces and component needs with mechanical and controls engineers, purchasing, production, quality, panel builders, and service personnel.
• Participate in reviews, record decisions and technical risks, check drawings and material lists, and resolve reviewer comments before release.
• Use approved CAD templates, symbols, component libraries, checklists, and engineering tools. Maintain drawing revisions in the product data management system.
• Support engineering change requests, orders, and notices. Follow ISO 9001 procedures and requirements for configuration control, document release, inspection, and process improvement.
• Assist with panel construction, equipment wiring, inspections, factory acceptance testing, installation, and drawing-related troubleshooting under engineering supervision.
• Update the electrical content of operating and maintenance manuals, including parts data, inspection instructions, troubleshooting guidance, and spare-parts recommendations.
• Complete other appropriate assignments from the manager and travel when required. Candidates must be able to obtain and retain a U.S. government security clearance.

 

Education and experience

Candidates may qualify through any of these education and experience combinations:

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, automation engineering, mechatronics, or a related field, with zero to two years of relevant machine electrical design experience.
• An associate degree in electrical design or a related technical field, with at least three years of directly relevant machine electrical design experience.
• A high school diploma or equivalent, with at least five years of directly relevant machine electrical design experience.

Required capabilities

• Practical ability to create and read machine electrical drawings and supporting documentation using AutoCAD Electrical or a comparable application.
• Basic understanding of machine power systems, control and safety circuits, motors and drives, grounding and bonding, wire sizing, and overcurrent protection.
• Introductory knowledge of NFPA 79 and UL 508A, with awareness of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, and machine safety considerations.
• Familiarity with revision control and engineering change workflows, including ECRs, ECOs, and ECNs.
• Exposure to selecting electrical components, calculating loads, sizing conductors and protective devices, laying out panels, inspecting panels, or marking up drawings. Experience may come from work, internships, coursework, labs, or technical projects.
• Ability to translate approved requirements and engineering direction into accurate documentation that production teams can use.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Teams, with particular strength in Excel and PowerPoint.
• Careful organization, attention to detail, dependable follow-through, and sound judgment about when to seek help.
• Clear communication with engineering colleagues, technicians, electricians, panel builders, suppliers, and other project contributors.
• A collaborative approach, openness to feedback, practical problem-solving skills, and an interest in improving CAD methods, standards, libraries, and release processes.

Helpful additional experience

• Familiarity with industrial electrical and control products from established manufacturers, such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB, Eaton, Phoenix Contact, WAGO, Rittal, or nVent HOFFMAN, and the ability to compare alternatives for a project.
• Work involving automated equipment, system integration, panel building, motor and drive systems, or industrial communications.
• Interest in regulated manufacturing applications, including defense, energetics, hazardous locations, robotics, or high-speed automation.
