Tesla is seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design interconnection and optimization of high-voltage electrical systems for large-scale industrial loads including manufacturing facilities, data centers, and energy storage projects. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in interconnecting large loads with utility providers, designing switchyards and substations at ultra-high voltages up to 765kV, implementing robust system protection strategies, and performing advanced load modeling. This role is critical to supporting Teslas ambitious growth in sustainable energy infrastructure, ensuring reliable, efficient, and scalable power delivery. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, utilities, and regulatory bodies to drive projects from concept to commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the interconnection process for large electrical loads (e.g., gigawatt-scale) with utility companies, including preparing interconnection applications, conducting feasibility studies, and negotiating agreements to ensure compliance with grid standards (e.g., NERC, IEEE).
  • Design and engineer switchyards, substations, and associated infrastructure at high voltages, including 765kV, 345kV, and lower (e.g., 138kV, 69kV), incorporating transformers, circuit breakers, bus systems, and grounding schemes.
  • Develop and implement system protection strategies, including relay coordination, fault analysis, and protective device settings, to safeguard equipment and maintain grid stability.
  • Perform load modeling and simulation using tools like SKM, ETAP, PSSE, or ASPEN to forecast power demands, analyze system impacts, and optimize load ramps for dynamic industrial applications.
  • Conduct power system studies, including short-circuit analysis, arc flash assessments, harmonic studies, and transient stability evaluations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., project managers, civil engineers) and external stakeholders (e.g., utilities, EPC contractors) to integrate designs with overall project timelines and budgets.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, ANSI, local utility requirements).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on high-voltage power systems.
  • Proven expertise in interconnecting large loads with electrical utilities, including experience with load studies, queue management, and interconnection agreements.
  • Extensive experience designing switchyards and substations at voltages including 765kV, 345kV, and lower, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of system protection principles, including relay design, coordination, and testing.
  • Proficiency in load modeling and power system simulation software (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
